Beautiful People Part IV | #MyFridayStory No. 135

Friends are the family you choose.

Shortly after my divorce, I met my snap-on Daughter. Through her, I met my Daughter-in-law-to-be. (I know that’s a mouthful, so I’ll use ‘Son’s partner’.) They had both started high school. They were best friends that lived a few streets apart and spent all their free time with each other.

The two played indoor soccer for an all-girls team at the local club. I’ve always believed sports to be a great way for children to learn certain life skills. Whether it is an individual game like golf or tennis or team games like soccer and rugby, there is a lot you can learn. Character is born out of the challenge to better yourself, to try harder and to never accept defeat as final.

Watching them play a high-energy game of indoor soccer against girls twice their size, win or lose, was always a thrill. Neither weighing more than a loaf of bread, they used their size as an advantage. They played together in a team for a few years becoming skilled soccer players. Their team climbed through the leagues.

My Son, Daughter, Snap-on Daughter and Son’s partner were all friends that would see each other from time to time. Only recently I discovered that my Son and his partner already had eyes for each other back in 2011. Though, both being in relationships at the time, they had to keep their feelings hidden. Four years later, they met up again, this time both single. Eventually, they were able to be together, their love for each alive and well.

That little girl I met and grew to love is today the Mother of my Grandson.

Not only has this beautiful union brought a new life into the world, but they have brought families together. For starters, my relationship with my ex-wife is healthier and more mature. Together, we are family with her family. We have grown to know one another and love one another.

This dynamo that came into my life as a little tweeny 15 years ago has taught me so much. As a mother, she is the best a child could ask for. Her love is overflowing and palpable. My grandson is spoiled to have a talented Mom that can dance with the stars, sings like an angel, and is an artistic master.

As tiny as she is, My Son’s partner is a giant in my eyes.

Some folks use the word ‘feisty,’ but I prefer, ‘brave.’

Having her in our family, I’m amazed how blessed I am.

More beautiful people.

Have an awesome weekend, stay safe! ??

As always, thanks for reading ??

My family are and always be my first and best friends. We were brought up like that. My mom always said to my siblings and I that at the end of the day we only have each other. So yes each one of us can moan about each other, but dare anyone else and they are toast.
