The Beatles and Perseverance
People may think The Beatles just showed up, played The Ed Sullivan Show February 1964, and took the world by storm.
Wrong.
After honing skills for many years, then taking off in the UK, EMI Records offered Capitol Records the option to release "Please Please Me" for the United States. They turned it down. Then Atlantic Records passed. Eventually a small label, Vee-Jay, cut a deal.
Vee-Jay released the U.S. single February, 1963 and sold 7,310 copies. No, not a typo.
Brian Epstein, The Beatles manager, kept pushing forward and lobbied the European talent scout for Sullivan among his efforts.
Then good fortune struck. Sullivan and his wife were in London and delayed at the airport. Sullivan witnessed a large crowd waiting in a rain storm and asked someone what they were waiting for. He was informed about The Beatles and their popularity.
So a year and a half after their initial single release, The Beatles broke through.
And how much were the "Fab Four" paid to appear? $10,000 for the four of them and Epstein, and not just once. It was a three appearance deal with Sullivan.
Did the boys sell themselves short? Well, 73 million people watched their first appearance.
You can take it from there.?
