Beating Unemployment By Presenting Yourself As More Than Just Qualified

Beating Unemployment By Presenting Yourself As More Than Just Qualified

In 2023's job market, employers expect to see many qualified candidates, so presenting yourself as qualified won't make you special ... it will make you average.

And most of those qualified candidates will also be currently employed, presenting a lower risk to employers. After all, how does an employer know that you weren't let go because you were an under/average performer, even if you were one of many laid off? With many qualified candidates to choose from, why would they take a risk of hiring an under/average performer, when they could hire a gamechanger?

Especially when you're unemployed, you need to present yourself as more than just qualified, to get more interviews, advance in the hiring process, change interviews into job offers and beat your competitors.

Here are 3 ways to present yourself as more than just qualified in your resumes and interviews:

  1. Killer First Impression:?You need to make a first impression that makes an employer think, WOW! You need a resume first impression that makes a hiring manager excited to interview you, and an interview first impression that grabs their interest (rather than just going through the motions). Your resume and interviews need to clearly show an employer that you're more than just qualified, but one of the very top candidates ... all in 6 seconds or less. (Hint: Few resumes or interviews do this, because few job seekers have been taught how - Most list a bunch of stuff, asking employers if they need any of it).
  2. Heavy Resume (And Interview) Customization:?The more you customize your resumes and interviews, the more you look like the best fit for the job. Sending the same (or lightly customized) resume to all jobs? Automated and human pre-screening are used to screen out applicants that appear to be a poor fit and ones who seem they aren't trying hard to get the job - by screening out resumes with little to no customization (even when you're applying for the same job function with all of your applications). Interviewers do the same thing during your interviews.
  3. Using Publicly Available Information To Prepare Your Resumes Or Interviews:?Publicly available information gives you zero advantage over your competitors. Worse, public information rarely reflects an individual hiring manager's current needs. This is especially true of job descriptions that almost never include current needs as they're standardized in large, medium and multi-location employers, written by HR and Legal, rather than the hiring manager. When written by the hiring manager, they're usually recycled from the departing employee, rather than spend a month waiting for HR and Legal revisions and approval.

Be honest with yourself ... how many of these three ways to present yourself as more than just qualified do you do a good job of clearly including in your resume and interviews?
