Most age 40+ job seekers feel that they offer amazing experience to their next employer.
But what do your target hiring managers see in your resume and in how you portray yourself in interviews? Do they see amazing ... or meh (= average)?
Unfortunately, most age 40+ job seekers portray themselves as average, even when they try to show how amazing their experience is.
It's what over 99% of resumes look like ... they describe your responsibilities, but they force employers to guess if that experience was great, average or terrible. You're probably doing this too, because nearly all age 40+ job seekers do this too.
Don't get me wrong ... ageism definitely exists, and it's damaging to both candidate and employers. But most resumes/interviews of age 40+ candidates result in decisions that look like ageism, when employer perception that you're average is often the real cause.
It's not just you. The reason most resumes are filled with average descriptions, is that most career resources teach it. Almost all career coaches/authors and outplacement firms teach you that describing your responsibilities is the way to present your career. It becomes how you think of your career (in your own head), also making you sound average in your interviews. Professional resume writers are trained and certified in writing average resumes.
Meh resumes/interviews describe what you were supposed to do (responsibilities), but your reader can't tell if you did it well, poorly, or completed your responsibilities. You think it's awesome, but employers only see average. But they also perceive that you're expecting higher compensation because of all your experience.
Cheaper (and less experienced) candidates are often viewed as a better risk than a more expensive average applicant. What you see is that you're losing opportunities that you should be getting, while younger candidates are chosen and you get feedback that you're overqualified. You blame employer ageism, when the real cause is you've been taught to undersell your awesome track record, instead making yourself appear average and overpriced.
I can show you how to translate meh into amazing, even if you were an average performer.
Rather than continue to blame employers, why not learn how to describe your experience so that it shows employers how awesome you are. Why not learn how to make employers see that you're a bargain at your compensation level? Why not lead employers to the decision that hiring a less experienced candidate would be foolish and negligent, even if they were only expecting 50% of your compensation level?
