Beating Burnout with authors Emily and Amelia Nagoski: "The real answer is connection."

You asked for this one, listeners. Hello Monday is on hiatus this week as we pull together a phenomenal group of episodes for the rest of the year. So, I asked your thoughts on what we should share from our archives. The answer was overwhelmingly consistent: you want to talk about burnout.
And, I get it. We've all been working hard. Rather than waiting for the pandemic to end, we're learning to live with it. It weighs on the psyche as we all make a thousand small decisions every day that we never even had to think through in before times: do I commute today, or work from home? Can we have an indoor playdate? Is this just a cold, or should I get a COVID test? I overheard my three-year-old give his stuffed puppy a "nose tickle" this morning and then announce to his sister, "No Covid!" And I thought, times have changed. I also thought, I'm tired.
Which brings me to today’s guests, doctors -- and sisters--?Emily ?and?Amelia Nagoski . They have a great book called?Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle .??In this episode, which we originally ran at this time last year, we talk about what causes burnout. We talk about emotional exhaustion--how emotions work in our bodies physically.
And we get to the fix: the fix to burnout and exhaustion and to all the bad feels we are feeling, is not a secret. When we feel?all the way?through them, we get to feel more connected—to the people we love, to ourselves. And that, it turns out, is?how you fix?burnou t.
This episode is longer than usual, and you will see why. It's important, and I hope that if you're experiencing burnout, it'll give you the tools and the energy to find your way through it, too. You?can?download the episode ?to hear about it, or listen to it below. Then, please,?share your own thoughts ?and tag them #HelloMonday so I can jump into the conversation.

3 年Great article!
Thank you for this episode, Jessi Hempel, it's great! I feel that "Burnout" is fast becoming the bible on dealing with burnout. What I found particularly useful is the clear differentiation between stress and stressor (the thing that causes the stress). I also appreciated the advice to personalize the strategies to your own preferences. In my work, we assess and reassemble the main building blocks of work and home life to create higher impact and remove barriers. Also, we work on resistance to tasks that can't be eliminated but cause stress, which tend to downspiral. Sometimes asking a simple question like "How can I do this without suffering/caring?" or "What if this didn't make me feel bad?" is enough for coming up with ideas for avoiding stress altogether.
