Beat Unemployment By Circumventing HR And Recruiters

If you're unemployed, you can beat unemployment by circumventing HR and recruiters.


It's important to know who's giving you this advice - I've been a 3rd party recruiter for over 20 years. I'm here to tell you that recruiters like internal recruiters, HR, and 3rd part recruiters (like me) are the worst ways for you to try and land a job, especially if you're unemployed.


Because recruiters don't make hiring decisions and it's not a recruiter's job to find you a job. It's their job to recommend a few qualified candidates, for the interviews that have the lowest odds of turning into offers. Internal recruiters screen out more risky and less qualified candidates. In addition, they redirect resumes (including the ones that you've sent through networking) into HR's resume screening database (ATS), keep a company compliant with hiring laws, and keep you from contacting hiring managers.


And in 2024, there are plenty of equally qualified candidates who are currently working that are less risky to hiring managers than those in career transition.


Unfair? Definitely. But it's fact. So you can either complain about it or do something about it ... I suggest learning how to do something about it, so here's one way to start.


Avoid us.


Stop applying online through job boards, company websites, LinkedIn or by sending us your resume. It's the job of HR and recruiters to get in your way and block you from getting to hiring managers.


Instead, learn how to get to hiring mangers directly and before the job is posted (even internally). Most job seekers don't do this well, because you've been taught to network in a way that causes you (or your resume) to be redirected back to HR. Also, most job seekers have been taught to network too late to be considered as one of the top candidates, leading to the worst quality interviews (that fail to advance or get offers).


Most companies have processes and policies (including Employee Referral Bonus Programs) designed to recapture resumes sent by networking efforts back into the Applicant Tracking Systems. This doesn't mean it's impossible to bypass HR and recruiters ... Instead, it means that your current networking method isn't very effective, because you haven't learned a more effective networking strategy to avoid HR and recruiters.
