The more I talk about LinkedIn, the more I realize that there is some fear involved with posting on the platform. I’ll pinpoint these fears and outweigh them with benefits and rational thinking. So let’s begin.
No one cares whether I post or not. So why should I post?
Reasoning
We post to share with our network thoughts and insights. We post to communicate our interests to our external environment. We post to start a conversation on topics we care about. So, we post for ourselves to begin with, while taking into account our audience, in order to create some value for it.
Where’s the value and uniqueness of my posts?! There’s definitely someone else out there, posting something similar, and maybe even better.
Reasoning
While this may be true, you never know who sees your post, how it will be interpreted and what change you may cause in one’s thinking and actions through your post. So, even if your post is not unique, if it’s honest and driven by genuine interest in something, it should definitely create value for some professionals.
What if I’m criticized for the content I post...?
Reasoning
That’s something we all have to deal with, especially when creating something or sharing our beliefs and values with the public. We can either “accept” (not internalize) the judgment and accept the fact that there’s no easier thing than to criticize and, in spite of that, keep experimenting and developing. OR we can give in to the fear of judgement. Accept only the criticism of people that can feel you, of people that are doing what you do. And give yourself time to find your voice.
What if I’ll make a mistake?!
Reasoning
Well that’s a possibility. But at least, you were brave enough to share your thoughts in first place. And in case a well established thought is expressed, pointing out something different from what you and believe, then it will be your post to have led to this revaluation
What if a prospect employer doesn’t like my posts?
Reasoning
What if an employer does like your posts? Anything one does, there will be supporters and haters. By sharing your views, you’ll attract similar minded people and probably dismiss people that doesn’t match your mindset. Both cases quite positive.
What if no one likes my posts?!
Reasoning
It’s a reality for anyone posting on linkedin. Only LinkediIn recognized influencers aren’t affected by this. But these are only a few hundred. Even users with 10.000 followers may post something that won’t bring much engagement and this has nothing to do with the quality of your posts... Besides, engagement is something that is build through time and occasionally it’s a bit random.
Who the hell am I to post on LinkedIn?
Reasoning
Is something many think before start posting... many people post on LinkedIn though, without being CEOs, business owners or influencers and there’s nothing wrong about it. Each of us post on LinkedIn to share our thoughts, insights and interests with multiple stakeholders for various reasons. As long as we have clear goals and whys, then you should defiantly post!
So, I have one final question for you: Ready to post?
