BEASTS IN SPACE (FORCE)!
Beast Code
We organize data into a lightweight product model (really fast) and provide a modular data visualization platform.
Recently, Beast Code had the opportunity to participate in the Space Launch Delta 45’s Inaugural Data Derby Hackathon, hosted at Patrick SFB’s innovation cell, The Forge. This hackathon focused on three main themes:
- Immersive Data Visualization
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
- Bring Your Own Data
Specifically, the first and the third applied to Beast Code, as we specialize both in pushing the boundaries of lightweight data visualization and in helping people make sense of and aggregate disparate data.
Our team consisted of the power trio of Lisa Bongiovanni, John Wargo, and Hunter Brock. They immediately went to work prototyping various solutions to multiple problem statements, chief among them shifting from the current launch structure to more of a true Spaceport concept, one that has been envisioned for years. In three days, we were able to help paint a vision of a future where a software solution truly helps accelerate capability and visualize multiple data sets into a centralized common operating picture.
Our team also received valuable feedback about our tool, Beast Core, on the trip. We took both the current version of our flagship product, and the beta for our next major release, to test it in the wild and get user feedback. While our current version was still successful, the architecture of our beta version allows much more flexibility in integrating new capabilities. We were fortunate to have two incredible members of the Supra Coders program working side by side with us, MSgt Dustin Stringer and SSgt Pariss Youngblood, both of whom came to the Hackathon with various skillsets, problems, and solutions of their own. They were able to help solve their own problems by building integrations directly into Beast Core and pair programming right alongside Wargo and Hunter, further accelerating capability delivery.
Ultimately, what users said set Beast Code apart was:
- Our knowledge and comprehension of the space launch domain (Thanks Supra Coders!)
- Our ability to intuitively visualize and interact with data
- Our open architecture that gives them the option to solve their own problems, as well as invite others to drive solutions
- Our ability to be agile, and our appetite to just try new things
- The fact that we already hold multiple ATOs (especially our Continuous-ATO from DoD Platform One’s Ironbank!)
Not only did we put on a good technical showing, but we also came home with some hardware! Here are the awards the team took home:
- Judges' Choice (Popular choice by the judges for most impactful solution)
- Hackers' Choice (Popular choice by the other teams for most impactful solution)
- Most Tactically Relevant
- Resiliency (The solution that will most ensure the ability to complete launches in a contested environment)
- Most Creative
- Best Data Visualization
