The beaming joy and hidden pain of leaving ING

In my line of work leaving never comes as a surprise. As I prepare myself to leave ING at the end of August 2018, memories of the past eight months are still livid. I am beginning to think of the time of my arrival until the time of my departure. The hollowness of feeling that my relationship with those that I most recently served is about to end is both upsetting and satisfying at the same time. 

First of all, I am thankful to everybody at ING for giving me this once in a life-time opportunity to be part of one of the largest Enterprise Agile Transformation in Europe. I’ve spent the past few days assimilating my thoughts about what made this assignment so special for me and the only word that keeps crossing my mind is…relationships. 

While business expects producing most valuable features soonest, what is, ultimately, going to be remembered is the formation of meaningful relationships and bonds between people to deliver on expectations of business. As an Agile coach, I guide these relationships to focus on ING’s new ways of working (WOW) while strengthening the bond between people. As I see, these bonds are going to form the foundation for building a new work culture at ING. My experience says that any attempt to create a new work culture without these bonds is likely to result only in a few quick wins and no long-lasting behavioural change.
