A Beacon of Healing & Hope: From Homefront to Home-Care

As we enter 2024, we at Yad Sarah are taking a moment of pause to reflect upon the last year, and particularly the past 85 days during which Israel has faced the anguish and hardships of war and terrorism.?

Through adversity, the spirit of Am Yisrael prevails. In the aftermath of October 7th, the nation came together in an astounding show of unity and chesed.?

Against this backdrop, Yad Sarah has emerged as a beacon of hope, with our network of over 7,000 volunteers (and many new recruits) tirelessly working to provide essential relief. We are humbled to take a leading role in the immediate and long-term rehabilitation of Israel, filling critical gaps in the healthcare system to mend the lives of wounded soldiers, civilians and families for stronger and healthier days ahead.

We immediately sprang into action – our constant “readiness” enabled us to rapidly mobilize our volunteers and over 120 branches, dramatically enhancing our activities for the sick and wounded to alleviate strain on hospital administrations, the IDF and security forces.?Here’s a snapshot of what that includes:

Filling the Gaps in Care

Yad Sarah's emergency wartime efforts have reached hundreds of thousands of individuals across the country. We've distributed over 46,150 pieces of critical medical equipment, issued over ILS 650,000 worth of medicines at no cost, handled over 10,000 urgent calls at our Emergency Medical Hotline, established 3 new branches to bolster aid amid mass internal displacement, recruited 350 volunteer drivers for the critical transport of evacuees and medical supplies, and provided hundreds of free on-site dental treatments to the displaced and the homebound.?

Shelter and Solace for Evacuees

With up to 200,000 individuals in Israel displaced by war, Yad Sarah's "Yirmiyahu 33" Rehabilitation and Wellness Hotel in Jerusalem has sheltered 400 evacuees with disabilities, special medical requirements, and their caregivers. As the first fully-accessible hotel in Israel, it offers evacuees a haven of respite where their individual needs to recuperate and rest are provided for. This includes specialized nursing care and world-class rehabilitation facilities such as a physiotherapy clinic, medical equipment, adjustable hospital beds, wheelchair-accessible amenities, medicines, and a volunteer-lead team that is available 24/7.

?Supporting the Soldiers who Protect Us

With unprecedented numbers of Israelis wounded – 10,000 and growing – Yad Sarah has provided vital rehabilitation support to over 2,500 troops – nearly half of Israel’s wounded soldiers. As part of our commitment to care for the troops risking their lives to defend us, Yad Sarah recently launched the Soldier Rehabilitation Unit, an aid hotline that brings together the full range of Yad Sarah’s services to provide dedicated care for wounded IDF soldiers through every stage of rehabilitation, from critical medical equipment to physiotherapy and our home hospitalization services.

Community in Action

Our success is owed to the unwavering support of our dedicated partners, volunteers, and generous supporters. It is heartening to witness the resilience of our community, coming together to make a difference. We extend our deep gratitude to the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), United Jewish Appeal (UJA) and many other foundations & individuals; for their benevolent emergency allocations, enabling us to expand our reach and impact.

Yad Sarah's commitment to service remains steadfast, and we are inspired by the compassion and solidarity demonstrated by our global community. Together, we will continue to provide essential aid, fostering a spirit of resilience and healing.

May the year ahead bring you respite of heart, body and spirit.
