Beach Umbrella Safety Takes a Leap Forward with New ASTM Standard
Beach days are meant for relaxation, but for years, the simple act of setting up a beach umbrella had hidden dangers. Recent efforts, however, have brought about a significant step forward in beach umbrella safety with the introduction of a new ASTM International standard (F3681) specifically addressing the safety of beach umbrellas and anchor devices.
This standard, developed by ASTM International’s consumer products committee (F15), is a result of several years of collaboration and research. According to Bill Schermerhorn, chair of the subcommittee overseeing the standard, the goal is to mitigate the hazards posed by windblown airborne beach umbrellas. The need for such precautions was underscored by Ed Quigley, an ASTM consumer member who was previously injured by an airborne beach umbrella. Quigley emphasizes that "people don't understand the danger of windblown airborne beach umbrellas...[they] are like a javelin with a sail attached."
The standard sets forth minimum requirements for safely anchoring all beach umbrellas. This includes specifications such as using an anchor device capable of withstanding a force equivalent to a 30 mph wind. The development process involved a range of stakeholders, including manufacturers, retailers, safety managers, and concerned citizens like Quigley, who have experienced firsthand the dangers of improperly secured beach umbrellas.
Quigley himself has been a driving force behind these safety improvements. After suffering a serious injury from a windblown beach umbrella, he founded Beach Umbrella Safety, an organization dedicated to raising awareness and preventing similar accidents. His advocacy efforts, along with those of others affected by beach umbrella accidents, have led to significant strides in improving beach umbrella safety standards.
As a Floridian, I spend countless hours on or near the water where the masses construct all forms of sunshades to avoid prolonged exposure. Unfortunately, many beachgoers don't take the time to properly secure items from the common wind gusts, hence the need to get this information in front of more people. This is especially important when you host families and friends for an outdoor event, and their safety is everyones responsibility.

The publication of ASTM F3681-24 marks a crucial milestone in ensuring the safety of beachgoers. Manufacturers can now use this standard to test their umbrellas and anchor devices, providing consumers with greater assurance that their beach equipment meets rigorous safety criteria.
Beachgoers need to be aware of these risks and take necessary precautions. By using beach umbrellas with compliant anchor devices, we can all enjoy sunny days by the sea with peace of mind. And let's face it; shade is invaluable when it is 90 degrees F (32c) out with humidity above 90%. Even for our furry friends.
