The BE-ST Bits of July

Hello and welcome to another monthly round-up, where we bring you the latest updates from BE-ST and the wider initiatives driving the sector towards a net zero carbon built environment. This month, we have five more exciting developments for you, including success from our training programmes, government visits, and progress being made on the retrofit of non-domestic properties across the UK.

1. Fleming's official certification on Midlothian Council’s first Passivhaus development: BE-ST training success story

Multiple Fleming team members have been completing Passivhaus training with BE-ST to enhance their Passivhaus knowledge and skills since the early days of our Low Carbon Learning programme. It's fantastic to see them apply these learnings in real-world projects like the Midlothian Council's first Passivhaus development.

Our Passivhaus Practical training, tailored to Tier 1 supply chain members working on commercial, educational, public service and residential projects at scale, is starting back in August. Find out more and sign up here.

2. The Scottish Government's Housing Minister's visit to BE-ST

This month, we had the pleasure of welcoming Paul McLennan, Minister for Housing at The Scottish Government , to the BE-ST Campus. It was a great opportunity to showcase our facilities and discuss innovations in rural and urban housing, the delivery of a Just Transition, and the enhancement of skills and workforce development and we're looking forward to continuing collaborations.

3. Progress on Accelerator Lab as tender info compiled and roof surveyed

Investigation works are progressing on the retrofit of our Accelerator Lab. Narro and John Gilbert Architects recently assessed the existing roof structure in preparation for installing a new solar array. This array will provide renewable energy for the new zero direct emissions heating system and other campus activities.

Continue to follow the journey as we retrofit our Accelerator Lab.

4. Non-domestic retrofit project, ALCHEMAI, has officially kicked off

Explore the UK trials accelerating non-domestic retrofit as part of a £1.9 million Innovate UK -funded project. Seven organisations, including BE-ST, are collaborating to test scalable and accessible retrofit approaches across 12 demonstrator sites in the UK.

Read more about the ALCHEMAI project.

5. Scottish Enterprise supports the sector in Clean Heat Accelerator

We were excited about the successful launch of Scottish Enterprise's Clean Heat Accelerator at Centrica this month, a training course supporting ambitious businesses in the clean heat sector. Participants, including many HeatSource champions, heard from experts and toured the net zero training facilities and the BE-ST Innovation Factory.
