BD and Cooking a Great Meal: The Main Course
Angela Meyer, PhD, PE

After a brief holiday break, I am back to my blogging about comparing cooking to business development. Today’s course is the MAIN Course.?I am writing this article in honor of the memory of one of the best client service specialists I ever knew Cole Silver, Esq. .?Cole always had the best advice on how to treat clients and build relationships. I am sure he is building them now in heaven.
You always look for variety when serving a main course but there is typically one consistent theme – protein, carb, and veg.?Much like a great main course, business development must have a consistent theme as well – doing good work for the people that know you, trust you, and value your contribution to solving their issues.
Never take for granted your “raving fans”. These are the people that consistently call you when they need some help or advice.?Make sure you are checking in with them just to see how they are.?Make sure you ask for feedback on how you are doing and whether the work that you are doing brings them value.?Help them to look good to their coworkers and supervisors. Help them be successful in their job. And, if you can, help them find business.?Pay it forward.
As I thought about this article, I saw a wonderful post online entitled “12 Ways to Show Clients You Care”
·??????Get to the Root of the Problem, and Solve It
·??????Recognize and React to Their Emotions
·??????Stay Updated on Their Business
·??????Invite Them to Your Exclusive Events
·??????Frequently Ask for Feedback
·??????Deliver on What You Promise
·??????Spread the Word About Their Business

·??????Adapt to Their Tools and Workflows
·??????Remember Their Name and Preferences
·??????Provide Them with Valuable Resources
·??????Create Engaging Reports and Presentations
·??????Own Up to Your Mistakes
If you take care of your best clients, you will always be successful.?Much like the main course of a great dinner, the diner, and the client, should always leave satisfied.
