Using Information from Other Applications

Importing or Linking CAD Files

Objective:

o?? Import or link existing CAD files (such as DWG) into a Revit model for design purposes.

Methods:

o?? Importing: Directly brings CAD data into Revit, allowing for direct changes to geometry if exploded. Exploded CAD imports may affect model performance.

o?? Linking: Preferred method in most cases as it offers better management from the Manage Links Dialog. Linked CAD files update automatically when reloaded.

Considerations:

o?? Import vs. Link: Decide based on anticipated changes to the CAD file and management preferences.

Performance:

o?? ?Imported categories may affect performance, while linked files maintain separate categories.

Functionality:

o?? Mirroring: Possible for both imported and linked CAD files.

o?? Snapping: Allows for snapping to imported geometry for accurate placement.

o?? Proxy Graphics: Revit supports reading proxy graphics from AutoCAD files, useful for representing AutoCAD Architecture objects without intelligence.

Best Practices:

o?? ??Explode Imported Geometry: Consider carefully before exploding imported CAD files to avoid performance issues.

Cutting Incoming Geometry

Objective:

o?? Understand how imported or linked geometry behaves in Revit and ensure it can be cut in plan or section views.

Categories:

o?? Objects must be assigned categories for Revit to cut them in views.

3D DWG Files:

·?????? Category Assignment: Imported or linked 3D DWG files have no category assigned by default.

·?????? Cutting Behavior: Enable cutting in views or import into a cuttable family category for proper cutting behavior.

3D Shapes from SAT or 3DM Files:

·?????? Category Assignment: Categories assigned to these shapes determine their cutting characteristics.

Additional Information Sources

·?????? IFC Files: Utilize Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) files in Revit models.

·?????? Images and PDF Files: Import or link raster images or PDF files for background or visual aid in views and sheets.

·?????? Point Cloud Files: Link for accurate visual reference of existing building or site conditions.

·?????? Loads Analysis from gbXML Files: Import gbXML files to design HVAC systems in Revit.

Tools and Tasks

·?????? Layers Management: Query, hide, delete, or change graphic display of layers in linked or imported CAD files.

·?????? Import/Link Reference: Refer to specific tasks and options when importing or linking files into a model.

·?????? DGN Conversion: Understand the conversion process from MicroStation to Autodesk products.

Site Design

Using Topography from the Civil Engineer

  • Objective: Incorporate topography data provided by civil engineers or landscape architects into a Revit model.
  • Workflow: Civil Engineer: Develops and publishes topography surfaces using Civil 3D. Project Lead: Verifies and shares the topography with the architect via Autodesk Docs. Architect: Links the topography to the Revit model for reference during building development. Update Process: After topography updates, the civil engineer republishes surfaces, and the architect reloads the linked topography in Revit.

Positioning Linked Topography

  • Automatic Positioning: Same Coordinate System: Topography is positioned using shared coordinates. Different Coordinate Systems: Topography is initially positioned center to center with the model.
  • Alignment Options: Align: Use coordinates from the topography to define the geolocation of the Revit model. Position center to center: Manually move the topography to the desired location.
  • Coordinate Updates: Coordinate updates from Revit to linked topography are not supported.

Working with Linked Topography

  • Functionality: Multiple Surfaces: One topography link may include multiple surfaces, each treated separately. Usage: Assign phases, display in views, place on sheets, create section views, specify contour settings, place site components, railings, and more.
  • Visibility and Graphics Control: Use Visibility/Graphics dialog to control display and graphics settings. Assign materials to the topography for visual representation.

Managing Linked Topography

  • Tools: Reload: Restore hosted elements to the topography surface after reloading. Reload from: Reload topography link from another location. Remove: Deleting a topography link also deletes hosted elements.

Additional Elements: Toposurfaces, Building Pads, Toposolids

  • Toposurfaces: Legacy elements supported for existing projects, offer limited interactions such as visibility modifications.
  • Building Pads: Legacy elements supported for existing projects, offer interactions like type change, structure modification, and movement.
  • Toposolids: Defined using elevation points or imported data, support various interactions including acting as hosts for site components, railings, and more.

Property Lines

  • Functionality: Viewing: Controlled via Visibility/Graphics dialog, can be displayed, scheduled, tagged, and exported. Scheduling: Include parameters like Name and Area in the schedule. Tagging: Tags available for reporting acreage or square footage. Exporting: Property line area information can be exported to an ODBC database.
