BIM is both a product and a process. The software tools facilitate the process, but without a collaborative workflow and information management strategy, the full potential of BIM cannot be realized.

This scenario leads to the generation of BIM Service Providers globally which can handle entire procedure of BIM and integrated project delivery and that offers many career opportunities for fresh graduates and professionals. BIM Industry works exactly like IT industry which support the various service sectors like Banking, Travel and Tourism, Medical services etc.


BIM as a lifecycle platform

BIM Shares similarities with Product Lifecycle Management – PLM in manufacturing and Automobile industry which address all stages including concept design to recycling. BIM also often refers as Building Lifecycle Management (BLM) stressing the importance of BIM as a platform for the creation and management of information about the buildings throughout their design, construction and serviceable life.

BIM as a lifecycle platform could look like,


Concept:

  • Imagine a central platform where all stakeholders across the project lifecycle (architects, engineers, contractors, facility managers, etc.) access, contribute to, and utilize a single,?rich information model. This model wouldn't just be a 3D visualization, but a dynamic repository containing: Geometric data:?3D representation of the building/infrastructure Non-geometric data:?Material properties, performance data, maintenance schedules, sustainability metrics, etc. Historical data:?Changes made throughout the lifecycle, captured and accessible for future reference.


Benefits:

  • Improved collaboration:?All stakeholders work from a single source of truth, reducing communication gaps and errors.
  • Optimized decision-making:?Data-driven insights from the model inform decisions at every stage, from design to operation.
