BCG Virtual Experience Program - My Best Work from Home Project

"Do more than just exist!"

This amazing quote by Steve Maraboli is finding it tougher to exist in our daily lives now. As we are all stuck in our homes amidst this global pandemic, self-isolation and quarantine days have already started giving us a tough time. Kudos to the ones who have imposed a regular and productive schedule on themselves!

While COVID-19 has given a seismic shift to our lives, I decided to try my luck on work-from-home and looked out for learning opportunities from the domains I've recently started venturing into. That's when I came across this Virtual Internship being offered by Boston Consulting Group.

BCG

I have always fancied what working with top Management Consulting firms would be like. The BCG Strategy Consulting Virtual Experience Program hit the nail on the head. Running on the InsideSherpa platform, this program is designed to give you a feel of what Strategy and Management Consulting at BCG is, and how they help their clients generate competitive advantage. This Virtual Experience Program is a self-paced learning opportunity for anybody from any background, to gain practical skills and experience from the BCG experts themselves.

I worked on a project, with a telecommunications operator client, who has had declining profits for several years. The target was to help drive profitability improvement. Working through the tasks assigned by the Principal, Project Leader, and Consultants from BCG, through the Program, the following steps were executed to achieve the target:

  1. Performed thorough market research and analyzed the reason behind the declining market share. Proposed considerable hypotheses and demonstrated its impact on profitability.
  2. Assessed the financial performance of the proposed consideration and forecasted revenue growth, costs, and profitability for the client, as per industry standards.
  3. Collected and evaluated consumer needs and designed an effective and consumer-friendly offering. Deduced the target segment for the product.
  4. Synthesized and summarized all findings into a crisp executive summary to be presented to the client and noted the recommendations received.
  5. Understood and addressed the possible concerns of the functional departments of the client organization.

At the end of each task, the real-world models were provided to give an insight as to how BCG leaders would have approached the challenge.

The program gave me a sneak-peek into some of the most essential Management Consulting skills:

  • Market Research
  • Data Analysis
  • Understanding Consumer Needs
  • Client Recommendations
  • Stakeholder Management
  • Financial Modeling
  • Sensitivity Analysis
  • and, Professional Communication.

Having a glimpse into the life of a BCGer was never so easy!

I hope your work-from-home becomes more interesting and memorable too, by the time we are able to combat the pandemic and resume normalcy. Happy 'work-from-home and chill'!
