BCCI's Money Mystery: How are they really spending it?

BCCI is one of the wealthiest and most powerful cricket governing bodies in the world, both on and off the pitch. By 2022, BCCI's net worth had increased tremendously and had surpassed INR 18,000 crore. BCCI will witness another round of financial windfalls with expected earnings of over USD 1.15 billion (INR 9 billion) five-year cycle between 2023-2027.?

Cricketing infrastructure development: The BCCI devotes a sizable percentage of its resources to modernising and expanding cricketing infrastructure around the nation. Recently, BCCI has allotted Rs 50 crore for infrastructure renovations at each of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 locations.


Stadium security: Security at cricket grounds for events like the IPL and other international matches is a significant financial burden for BCCI. The cost of stadium security varies depending on the location. For instance, Mumbai police charges Rs 70 lakh whereas Uttar Pradesh police charges Rs 1.2 – Rs 1.6 crore per match.?


Players' salaries: BCCI allocates a substantial portion of its funds towards players' salaries. Male players are categorized into A+, A, B, and C grades, with corresponding annual salaries of ?7 crore, ?5 crore, ?3 crore, and ?1 crore, respectively. Female athletes are paid with a similar pay system. BCCI pays?50 lakh to A-grade players, 30 lakh to B-grade players and 10 lakh to C-grade players per year.


Pension plans: In 2022, the BCCI announced an increase in their pension plan. The BCCI offers pensions to former domestic and international players, as well as past umpires, who have represented India. Former men's first-class athletes receive INR 30,000, while former Test athletes receive INR 60,000. Women who play for international teams receive INR 52,500, while first-class cricketers who left the game before 2003 receive INR 45,000.


Insurance: The BCCI has thorough insurance coverage for many different things, such as employee medical benefits, player compensation for lost time due to injury or match cancellations, and coverage for its offices and IPL games.


Other expenses: The BCCI also spends funds on other areas such as making donations, promoting and encouraging other sports, and meeting taxation obligations.
