B.C. Government May Remove Some Housing Approval Powers From Municipal Governments

- The B.C. Government is considering taking away some of the municipalities’ permit powers they have to approve housing.?

- David Eby, Attorney General of British Columbia, says municipalities are not approving enough housing for our population growth, as too many projects become stalled at the approval stage as local councils deliberate over building heights, neighbourhood character, etc.?

- Eby says municipalities should have the power to determine where housing needs to go, where to prioritize growth, and heritage areas; but should not be allowed to decide whether or not housing is built.?

- The Union of B.C. municipalities worries this new proposal will not allow municipalities to maintain local autonomy of the decision-making process in their communities.?
