BBC and Disney+ Partnership - Transforming ‘Doctor Who’ into a Global Franchise

Disney+ is set to house the BBC cult classic Doctor Who and transform a national treasure into a Global franchise.

Almost everyone I know in the UK tuned in to Doctor Who at some point in their life. I myself was a huge fan of the show. I attended a Doctor Who convention (nerdy I know), my walls featured a David Tennant poster, and I was thoroughly traumatised by the weeping Angel and Gas Mask Children episodes (a collective experience I am told!).

Now, Doctor Who episodes will be available worldwide as the streaming giant Disney+ and BBC state they will “Under a shared creative vision, they will deliver this quintessentially British show to future generations on an unprecedented scale with Disney+ as the exclusive home for new seasons of?Doctor Who?outside the UK and Ireland”

The new season, starring Ncuti Gatwa, will premiere late next year. Showrunner Russel T Davies’ (responsible for the 2005 revival) is also returning and states that he is “I love this show, and this is the best of both worlds – with the vision and joy of the BBC and Disney+ together we can launch the TARDIS all around the planet, reaching a new generation of fans while keeping our traditional home firmly on the BBC in the UK.”

Returning to our screens November 2023, Doctor Who is set to reach more than 150 markets around the world which seems like an apt celebration of the shows 60th anniversary.

AND… (spoiler alert) My favourite Doctor, David Tennant, is back for a few special episodes

I am thoroughly looking forward to seeing the newest Doctor on our screens!

Interesting, the quality in writing has been in decline for years and the heritage completely disregarded. The ratings have also followed the trend of decline since Matt Smith left the role. Realistically they should of taken a break as they did in the 90s, to reevaluate the quality control needed to ensure fans are still engaged with the future direction. Most are predicting a short rating boost due to David Tennant returning, then a complete collapse. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
