The BazBall Transformation : A Paradigm Shift for Sports and Business
In sports, as in business, the highest levels of competition have driven amazing advances in the way we do just about everything. In business, our ability to investigate, review, and purchase just about anything anywhere at any time is simply the norm now. And in the world of sports, the advancements are evident in our ability to run faster, jump further, and last much longer while competing.
?
In competitive environments, countless hours and dollars are spent on discovering new ways to evolve, all with one purpose - to get ahead of the competition, grab market share, and create new wealth within businesses. Similarly, in sports, coaches strive to invent new strategies, develop the strength and stamina of their athletes, all in the pursuit of victories.
?
However, as Bob Dylan so aptly said, "Times…??they are a Changing," especially in the sporting world.
?
As someone who grew up in the 1970s, I, like many boys, dreamed of playing cricket for Australia and walking out on the MCG in a Boxing Day test match. I can vividly remember being glued to my transistor radio, listening to updates on how Lillee, Thompson, and Max Walker were performing against our imperial enemies, the England Cricket team, during every Ashes Test series.
?
Today, we have the Ashes broadcasted live on our wide-screen TVs, allowing us to fully experience every ball bowled from the famous grounds. Additionally, we have access to a plethora of podcasts from Englishmen, Aussies living in England, and mainstream media. So not only do we see the action, but we also get detailed insights into the mood of the spectators and the English perspective on their colonial relatives from Down Under!
?
Without delving too much into the sporting details, this Ashes series has witnessed its fair share of typical controversial decisions, triggering emotional responses from some quarters. However, it appears that this is not much different when the pasty white Poms have to tour Australia during our summers!
But what sets this Ashes series apart is what the British tabloids have labelled "BAzBall," a direct reference to the English team's new test cricket coach, Brendon McMullum. As a former player for New Zealand, his style, flair, and batting ability propelled New Zealand to unprecedented levels. Brendon played cricket at one speed, in top gear, traveling at 100 miles per hour. Most importantly, he was incredibly entertaining to watch. He did the impossible with the bat and in the field, attempting risky moves that no one else would dare. But not "Baza."
?
His impact on the English team over the last 18 months has been astonishing. Notably, they began winning and, in doing so, started scoring runs faster and consistently reaching high scores, something not commonly seen from England's cricket team.
?
During this transformation, something else changed. The English team started to believe that enjoying themselves while playing would lead to better cricket. They adopted an entertaining form of cricket, hoping to attract more spectators and support for this new approach.
?
And in this Ashes series, that's exactly what happened. The English have gone crazy about BazBall and how it has revolutionized the world of modern competitive cricket.

However, there's one significant problem with the new world BazBall is producing. The primary goal has become entertainment, with winning being seen as an outcome of the BazBall process. This was evident in the Ashes. Australia officially won the first 2 Test Matches. Yet, the English cricketers, media, and the public seemed to believe that England had a moral victory in both games simply because of the entertainment they provided.
?
Predictions are always risky, as so many things can impact the future. However, if I were to draw a comparison to the English BazBall team, I am reminded of a famous basketball team.
During the 1930s and 1940s, the Harlem Globetrotters faced racial discrimination and challenges as an all-black team in a predominantly white sports world. Nevertheless, they persevered and gained popularity through their impressive basketball skills on the court.
?
The team's popularity grew rapidly during the 1950s and 1960s as they embarked on international tours, showcasing their basketball talents to audiences worldwide. They became basketball ambassadors, renowned for combining athleticism, showmanship, and humor in their performances.
Today, the Harlem Globetrotters continue to inspire and entertain audiences of all ages, showcasing the joy of basketball and spreading goodwill around the world through their unique brand of basketball showmanship.
?
Similarly, will the English Cricket Team be remembered for winning the most competitive test cricket series played around the world, or will they go down in history as the Harlem Globetrotters of Cricket, focused on showcasing the beauty of cricket as entertainment?
?
Regardless, I now want to focus on the BazBall transformation and consider how, in the competitive world of business, we can learn from the BazBall journey.

Learning from BazBall: Insights for Businesses
The transformation we've witnessed in the sports world, where teams are prioritizing entertainment and enjoying the game, offers valuable insights for businesses. In the pursuit of success, companies can draw parallels and learn from the shift in focus towards entertainment and employee-centric approaches.
?
In a highly competitive world, where success often seems synonymous with winning, sports and business share valuable lessons in finding a balance between competition and entertainment. By taking cues from the sporting world's shift towards focusing on employee well-being, brand perception, and innovation, businesses can redefine success beyond mere financial gains. Ultimately, embracing a holistic approach that prioritizes employees, customers, and ethical values can pave the way for long-term success, just as it has for the transformative England BazBall team in the world of modern competitive cricket.

1 年Love your analogy and insights for businesses!! Now, the essential question - Would Aussies win the final test match today or will it be English Bazball that will come out as winner? As a neutral cricket fan (and fan of Test matches), I feel Cricket is ultimate winner and ICC must do more to prolong test cricket and expand internationally where real skills are tested over 5 days instead of just 20 overs or 100 balls.
