Tuesday evening, June 11, {2019!}, I saw "The Prompter" at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor and found the Wade Dooley original production that he actually stars-in that assists leading lady Irene Young that Tovah Feldshuh Levy played, was brilliant. Tovah Feldshuh Levy has been in my collection for some time, and it was a true pleasure to have seen her in "The Prompter" - and I was able to meet her afterwards and wish her "Sarava!" and receive Wade Dooley's and her signatures.
Tovah Feldshuh Levy was such a welcome to see at Bay Street Theater along with Wade Dooley. The consistent "play-off" by The Prompters performers was exceptional. Whether the characters were able to focus in correct time with each other or not was essential to me for the production. I cherished the loving bond - or what did seem to be an actual loving bond - between the characters of Wade & Irene Young. The two performers - I could tell - did make use of their specifics!
{When the character of Wade mentioned his grandmother, I thought of my own grandmother as she and I attended NUMEROUS Broadway productions. - As a matter of fact - I attended Delehanty High School in Jamaica (Queens, NY) when Chicago was at the 46th Street Theatre. My sister had a Delehanty High School classmate named Carol Wagner, and her father {Art Wagner} was the Chicago accompanist. My grandmother and I got to go backstage - actually right on the 46th Street Theatre stage - after the Chicago matinee we attended, and met Art Wagner, and he introduced us to Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, and Jerry Orbach. I got some PLAYBILLs signed by Gwen Verdon, Chita Rivera, and Jerry Orbach, by not overstaying my welcome!}
Tovah Feldshuh Levy is certainly remarkable and her portrayal of Irene Young was phenomenal. She was able to get in-tune with Wade Dooley's character when appropriate for Irene Young to consider doing so. Wade Dooley kept his pace with his bravo of a tale that was delivered with an incredible pace. Irene Young's character was timeless. She spoke with candor. The character of Irene Young had an extraordinary career - and the two performers did attempt to stay in touch regarding what seemed to be a truly loving exchange.
I found The Prompter to be a delightful originally-developed production.

“Becoming Dr. Ruth,” a play starring Tovah Feldshuh and written by Mark St. Germain, enjoyed a successful evening for its Off-Broadway opening night at Edmond J. Safra Hall at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York on Thursday, December 16.
The one-woman show, which was staged to critical acclaim during Bay Street Theater’s 30th anniversary summer season in 2021, ran through Sunday, January 2, 2022, at the Museum of Jewish Heritage’s newly renovated, state-of-the-art theater in Battery Park City. Tickets started at $59 and were available at baystreet.org. The production had a runtime of 90 minutes with no intermission and was being performed in compliance with current New York State health and safety requirements for indoor performances.
The opening night show featured an appearance from Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who joined Tovah Feldshuh on stage following the performance and greeted a long line of guests at the opening night after party. Attendees included President and CEO of the Museum of Jewish Heritage, Jack Kliger; Broadway producers Jamie deRoy, Mary Maggio, and Neal Rubinstein; Broadway HD co-founder and Broadway League member Bonnie Comley and Bay Street board member Stewart Lane; plus Bay Street Theater board members Carol Konner, Wendy Hashmall and husband David, and Eric Segal and wife Joyce.
Directed by Bay Street Theater’s artistic director Scott Schwartz, “Becoming Dr. Ruth” chronicles the life of noted psychologist Dr. Ruth Westheimer, from her early years fleeing Nazi Germany, living as an orphan in Switzerland, to her service in the Israeli armed forces as a sharpshooter, and her later life and career in New York. “Becoming Dr. Ruth” is a humorous and heartfelt portrait detailing Dr. Ruth’s remarkable journey against so many odds to become a pioneer in the psychology of human sexuality and the world’s most famous sex therapist. “Becoming Dr. Ruth” reunites Feldshuh and Schwartz in New York for the first time since their major success with “Golda’s Balcony” — which became the longest running one-woman show in Broadway history.
