Welcome to another edition of "Leadership Unveiled," where we battle with your inner critic and confront an invisible adversary many of us face this week: imposter syndrome. This phenomenon, especially prevalent among women of colour in leadership, can undermine our confidence and our potential. Let's explore how to overcome these feelings and step into our power.

Understanding Your Inner Critic

‘Battling your inner critic’? refers to the internal struggle individuals faced when your thoughts and perceptions undermine your confidence, abilities, and accomplishments. This inner critic often manifests as self-doubt, fear of failure, and feelings of inadequacy.

Your inner critic is more commonly known as imposter syndrome.? Studies have shown that imposter syndrome is commonly reported among women of colour, due to systemic barriers, discrimination, and stereotypes faced in professional and academic settings. These factors can exacerbate feelings of self-doubt, insecurity, and fear of being exposed as a fraud, imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome manifests in the inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved due to one's own efforts or skills. It's a common barrier to embracing authentic leadership.

Strategies to Combat Imposter Syndrome

Acknowledge Your Feelings: Recognising imposter syndrome is the first step to overcoming it. Understand that it's a common experience, not a reflection of your capabilities.

Understand Your Inner Critic: Explore the origins and triggers of your? inner critic, such as societal expectations, past experiences, or personal insecurities.

Celebrate Your Achievements: Keep a record of your accomplishments, big and small, to remind yourself of your successes and contributions.

Seek Support: Surround yourself with other amazing women, mentors and peers who understand your journey and can provide perspective and encouragement.

Reframe Your Thoughts: Challenge the negative thoughts that fuel imposter syndrome and battle your inner critic by questioning their accuracy and reframing them into positive affirmations.

The Power of Authenticity in Overcoming Doubt

Embracing your authentic self is a powerful antidote to imposter syndrome. When you lead authentically, acknowledging your strengths and areas for growth, you validate your right to be in your position.

I am currently engaging with Positive Intelligence coaching with Coach Shirzad, who has written a bestseller of the same name. I highly recommend his methods to combat imposter syndrome, he refers to as our saboteurs'. He evidences important, but easy exercises to engage our sage who is empathetic, curious, focused and whom we can call into action when our imposter thinking shows up. The exercises he suggests strengthens neural pathways that combat imposter syndrome thinking.
