Battling Imposter Syndrome: Confidence in Success for First-Generation Millionaires of Color

A THOUGHT LEADERSHIP SERIES FROM DR. AERIAL

Imposter syndrome is a powerful phenomenon that affects many high achievers, but it can be especially challenging for first-generation millionaires of color. Despite breaking through systemic barriers, many still struggle with feelings of self-doubt, fearing they’ll be exposed as “frauds” despite their clear accomplishments. This lingering sense of being an outsider often undermines confidence, leaving them questioning their place, even in spaces they’ve rightfully earned.

Now, we know that imposter syndrome can be experienced by anyone.

However...

As an executive coach, I’ve found imposter syndrome to be one of the major barriers to effectively positioning oneself as a high-profile public figure or high-net-worth individual.

First-generation millionaires of color, in particular, often don’t fully believe in their unique ability to leverage their success, influence rooms, and create lasting change. This self-doubt prevents them from embracing their power and showcasing the full scope of their influence.

But the truth is, you belong were you are.

If you’re navigating a journey of wealth accumulation, business growth or executive positioning, it’s crucial to address imposter syndrome head-on to confidently own your success.

Here are five strategies to help:

1. Recognize and Acknowledge Imposter Feelings

First, it’s important to recognize that imposter syndrome is common, especially among trailblazers. Acknowledging these feelings is the first step toward overcoming them. Keeping a record of your achievements—such as positive feedback, deals closed, or obstacles overcome—can be an invaluable tool. Regularly revisiting these successes reinforces the reality of your capabilities and helps keep self-doubt at bay.

2. Reframe Negative Thoughts

When imposter syndrome creeps in, it’s essential to reframe negative thoughts. Challenge them with evidence of your past successes, skills, and the hard work that has gotten you this far. Remember: your presence and influence are a result of your effort, not luck. You’ve earned the right to be where you are.

Using cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT) to challenge irrational thoughts can help you break free from the “I don’t belong here” mentality. Replacing self-doubt with self-affirmation helps ground your confidence in facts.

3. Seek Support Through Coaching and Community

A 1:1 executive coaching relationship can be one of the most effective ways to combat imposter syndrome. As a coach, I work with first-generation millionaires to help them unpack and process feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. Having a dedicated space to explore these emotions with someone who understands both the challenges of leadership and the nuances of being a trailblazer can be incredibly empowering.

Whether it’s reframing your perspective, gaining clarity on your goals, or learning how to confidently step into high-stakes situations, working with a coach offers tailored, personalized support and ensures you receive consistent feedback and guidance to fully own your success.

Also, you must surround yourself with a support network of trusted mentors, peers, and colleagues. Talking about imposter syndrome with others helps provide validation and perspective. Programs like dreambloc, led by Aniesia Williams , are creating spaces where founders of color can access mentors, investors, and deal-flow rooms to support their growth. These kinds of connections are invaluable, offering both emotional support and practical guidance.

4. Embrace Continuous Learning

One of the most empowering ways to overcome imposter syndrome is to embrace a growth mindset. Viewing every experience—both successes and setbacks—as an opportunity to learn helps you grow more comfortable in your skin. As you continue to develop new skills, you’ll feel more equipped and confident to take on challenges, which in turn reduces self-doubt.

5. Set Realistic Expectations

Lastly, remember that perfection is unattainable.

Many first-generation millionaires feel pressure to perform flawlessly, but this expectation can fuel imposter syndrome. Instead, set realistic goals for yourself and take time to celebrate even the smallest victories. The excellence is already in you and you've proven it. Recognizing this will help reduce the pressure to be perfect, and focus on the excellence that allowed you to achieve what you've already accomplished and will propel you forward.

Key Points:

  • Imposter syndrome is common—especially for first-generation millionaires of color.
  • Reframe negative thoughts and focus on the facts: you’ve earned your success.
  • Executive coaching provides personalized support to overcome self-doubt.
  • Continuous learning boosts confidence and reinforces your sense of belonging.
  • Set realistic goals and acknowledge your progress along the way.

Critical Questions:

  1. How has imposter syndrome affected your ability to position yourself as a high-profile leader?
  2. What strategies have you used to overcome self-doubt and embrace your success?
  3. How can community and coaching help you leverage your unique position to influence and lead?
