BATTLE OF TWO TOP GUNS IN SMARTPHONE GIMBAL MARKET
FEIYU TECH SPG V/S DJI OSMO PLUS : BATTLE OF TWO TOP GUNS IN SMARTPHONE GIMBAL MARKET
Smartphone camera is great, shaky video is not. Here we bring in the gimbals in the scene and the whole things change drastically. Smartphone Gimbals are the tools for the professional or those who want to make their video look like professional. These smart and durable devices keep the camera steady and smooth out the shot. Today, here in this article we have brought out two of the most impressive smartphone gimbal for comparison, the DJI Osmo Plus, and Feiyu Tech SPG. Osmo Plus which is pretty much known for its built-in camera on the other hand SPG is a generic solution providing exclusive features for unleashing the full potential of mobile videography.
Design
Both follow the same design principles, basically we get a long handle, some counter balancing arms, the motors and the actual smartphone holders. When compared on the basis of the design department, DJI Osmo is the one with the coolest look. It gives an impression like it came out of a cockpit of an aircraft or something, it looks amazing in the hand with the premium look it comes with and it is also the most ergonomic out of all in this range. The only downside that one can notice is the lack of standard tripod mount on the underside. However, on the other hand, Feiyu Tech is the most generic looking gimbal but it is the most compact one which makes it really easy to travel with and top of that it offers two ? inches mount on its handle both for vertical and horizontal attachment. Best of all SPG features a splash-proof body which makes the device a perfect gear to carry even in rainy weather.
Mounting and balancing
Getting ready for action is super easy as it takes no more than 30 seconds to do. Both pretty much follow the same process. Basically, you just place your smartphone into the holder and from there we get a fine tool to roll angle. As far as SPG is concerned it comes with a smart knob and a sliding arm, once you get a perfect balance next simply tighten the knob and it’s done. DJI follows the same principle simply mount the smartphone in the holder and adjust the arm for the perfect balance and once done tighten the screw. The next thing that generally people will want to figure out is the maximum payload that each of them can carry. When mounts with accessories like external mic and lenses both of them didn’t perform the way we expected. Although one can still use them, but we won’t recommend as it can heavily effect the motor
Working modes
Here, we will talk about the several modes on which both DJI Osmo Plus and Feiyu Tech SPG can work. First of all, we put on test the panning mode, this basically allows the gimbal to pan left and right while keeping the pitch and roll fixed. Putting on test SPG on panning operation it scores some really great numbers allowing users to pan the gear 360 degrees. While on the other hand DJI Osmo Plus acts a bit strangely in this department. In order to access the pan mode in Osmo Plus you need to run the DJI Go app and enable it from inside, which is kind of a pain as a user would rather like to have it built-in with the Gimbal itself. Next one here is the lock mode, which is pretty much self-explanatory, when enabled the smartphone gimbal lock its orientation. This means when moving the direction left and right or twisting it the orientation of smartphone will not change whatsoever. With the DJI Osmo+ and Feiyu Tech SPG, they have these triggers on their body which on holding or pressing can enable the lock mode at any given time which is pretty useful for day to day purpose. Finally, there is the follow mode or we could say a mode where we could either place the Gimbal or hold the gimbal and it will tilt, pan and roll on its own, in short while activated the smart gimbal will act accordingly to the subject. While putting up on use we found that Feiyu Tech has all the right points with its implementation and by far the most versatile and also intuitive when it comes to using different modes. By default, its work on pan mode and by pressing the button twice it will activate the follow mode and with another click on function button on can simply put the device in lock mode. Overall it’s really quick and you don’t have to cycle through to get to different modes.
Mobile Application
The next thing on which we will try to compare both the device is the compatibility with the mobile application. First, we will talk about Feiyu Tech SPG here, the reliable device like on every other department really scores well with the Feiyu ON app. It is basic as anyone could have asked for, the ability to shoot 4K resolution video is one of the most like option that it comes with. While it also let easy access to remote control, parameter setting and firmware update. However, on the other hand, one may think DJI Osmo Plus mobile app DJI GO is more robust than the Feiyu Tech SPG app with the price tag it comes with, and fortunately, it is. It let users to capture and share beautiful content directly with DJI Osmo Plus. One can even customize the video by adding music and video templates and share the creativity in minutes.
Subject Tracking
Another cool feature that both DJI Osmo Plus and Feiyu Tech offers is the smart tracking. Such a feature is kind of pretty indispensable if you’re working alone. Here the DJI gets the slight advantage over the Feiyu Tech as with Osmo plus we can pretty much track everything simply by creating a box in the screen while SPG only offers facial tracking, if you try to track something else you wouldn’t be able to do that.
Stabilization performance.
So now here we are at the end of the article and now we will compare both incredible smartphone gimbal on the basis of the most important part and i.e. its stabilization because ultimately that’s what you’re pretty much investing on. But honestly, it is quite difficult to pick out a clear winner as both of them perform differently in different situation. So for that we test both of them in different scenarios like first we choose to carry both the gimbals while walking, here we keep smartphone camera with 4K setting while turning off the OIS and both the device works superbly, in short, a ton better than simply relying on in-built camera OIS. While if you want to get the perfect floating on air look you definitely should go with DJI Osmo+, as it comes pretty much the best one when it comes to stabilizing the footage, we don’t see the jerky motion as much. And finally we test both of them on basis of running with the gimbal, and just like the walking both did a fantastic job. Of course if you're jumping or running hard, you pretty much will notice the harsh jitters in the footage, but for the most part, if we compare this with the handheld footage it did a remarkable job.
So upon concluding the article we can clearly say Feiyu Tech SPG without any doubt is the real winner with its plethora of feature and with a pretty impressive price of just 150$. Where on the other hand DJI Osmo definitely got an edge with its powerful motors and 7x zoom capabilities but it’s the price tag (300$) which goes against it. Overall, it won’t be wrong to say that the whole point about getting a gimbal is to stabilize a video footage and that’s what we get from both, pick any and you would definitely experience something awesome.
