The Battle of the Somme
The Battle of the Somme
Is long gone
But the memories of those lost still lives on
100 years today this fateful day
Lots of lives cut short and in their prime
A truly horrific time
Lots of nationalities had major casualties
A bloody slaughter which has made the history books
Hell on earth the poor men faced
Brothers in arms that can never be replaced
Mothers and daughters and sisters cries
Knowing that their dear loved ones had died
The gun fire, the trenches the bodies everywhere
Now all in neat lines their headstones appear
With a commemorative building to record all the names -of those that will never be seen again
Heartbreaking to hear the stories told of those that survived the battle retold
Future generations need to understand the loss
And with war there is always a high cost
United in peace and harmony
Is the best place to be
Respecting those that have now gone
Learning from the past - their stories live on
Not letting their deaths be in vain
Laying the poppies and cornflowers to show that we care
A moment of silence and a prayer
Valuing their bravery for our freedom today
Never forgetting the fears they faced
Their memories will never be replaced
United together from what has past
Working together to ensure peace lasts
Locked in our hearts forever more
Those that laid down their lives
Commemorating their bravery
With a strong sense of pride
Emotions raw
Lighting a candle and remembering that fateful time
This harsh history lesson recorded in time
We need hope and unity for our generations to come
Letting them know what these brave men had done
Grateful to those that sacrificed their lives
They fought for our freedom and liberty
And without them we would never be free
Now we can look back and reflect
Forever in their debt
Their memories will live on as we will never forget.
