?In May 1942, the Imperial Japanese Navy was intent on transporting an invasion force to seize and occupy Port Moresby from the sea. That they didn't succeed was due entirely to a battle fought from 4 - 8 May 1942, out of sight of land and indeed out of sight of the combatant ships themselves. ?
?In the battle which re-defined naval warfare, particularly in the vastness of the Pacific, rival fleets did not often sight the enemy. ?However, their aircraft did. ?As is so often the case, the Fortunes of War were not entirely predictable. ?
