Battle of AI Models
Open-Source AI vs. Proprietary Models
DeepSeek vs OpenAI
Power of Azure AI Foundry / GitHub CoPilot / Responsible AI When Using Open-Source AI Models
The speed at which geopolitics, tech innovation, and policy are evolving is truly mind-blowing right now. As someone with a background in open-source, I’m interested in developments in Open-Source AI models and how they are outpacing proprietary models in both cost and performance. I also wanted to highlight some of Open-Source AI vs. Proprietary Models
Global AI Geopolitics and Tech Compete
As we’ve been discussing the US AI Diffusion Regulations aimed at controlling the distribution of advanced AI chips, AI models…etc, we’ve also seen announcements from China regarding their cutting-edge, cost-effective AI models. The timing here is quite interesting, as it seems China is strategically positioning itself to fill the potential gap that may emerge from the heavy AI regulations.
Open-Source vs. Proprietary AI Models
First, DeepSeek R1 exploded onto the scene, throwing the AI world for a loop. With 671 billion parameters and a 128,000-token context, it’s ~27 times cheaper than OpenAI’s o1 and delivers good performance in coding and math! Triggering a $1T market impact.
Not to be outdone, Alibaba’s Qwen 2.5 jumped in with its own powerful models, challenging both DeepSeek and OpenAI.

And, of course, OpenAI’s o3 Mini is now out, offering cutting-edge science and coding power at half the price of GPT-4, though DeepSeek still comes first in affordability!
Why is Open-Source AI Models Performing?
Some of the tech leaders believe that Open-Source AI models have an edge over proprietary ones, thanks to their rapid innovation and collaborative development. As a result, Open-Source models are poised to continue outperforming proprietary models, both in terms of performance and cost. This shift is driving increased adoption of Open-Source AI in the industry.
Power of Azure AI Foundry and GitHub CoPilot, when using Open-Source AI Models
Azure AI Foundry now supports over 1,800 AI models—everything from Open Source gems to proprietary powerhouses like DeepSeek R1, OpenAI 03 Mini, Llama 3.3, Mistral.ai, NVIDIA, Microsoft Phi 4, Hugging Face….and more. With GitHub Copilot and Azure AI Foundry, developers can easily access and utilize a wide range of AI models that best meet their specific use case, performance, and cost requirements for developing, deploying, and managing innovative AI applications. Additionally, Azure AI Foundry provides integrated tools and seamless support across various AI services, empowering organizations to scale their AI capabilities quickly while ensuring operational efficiency and robust security.
Responsible AI, when using Open-Source AI Models
When customers use Open-Source AI models on Azure, they’re still backed by the full power of Azure Responsible AI. With built-in security, privacy, and ethical guidelines, we ensure all AI is deployed safely and responsibly. Customers benefit from all the capabilities of RAI tools, including Azure AI Content Safety for advanced AI guardrails, along with robust security and privacy features. Customer data is fully protected, honouring our EU Data Boundry investments. It's not shared with other customers or model providers, and we do not use it to train our own models.
In summary, the Open-Source AI landscape is thriving with innovation, and Microsoft Azure stands out as the premier platform for developers. It empowers Developers to create incredible AI-infused applications using cutting-edge open-source tools and AI models.
