Fear – an unpleasant emotion triggered by the threat of danger pain or harm. It’s a natural caveman instinct which causes adrenaline to be released, contributing to our ability to perform rationally and to our full potential.
Some people can adapt and evolve from experience. Take the England cricket team for example, a new test series comes around and the fear of a new game-loss combined with the memories of past-failures adds pressure to the players. The cricketers must take this fear and turn it into motivation, or they will crumble and fail to rise to the occasion.
In business failure is part of development, with individuals learning from their mistakes, and striving for improvement. Succeeding specifically in the sales arena requires a tough fight; combining new techniques, intent and injections of new skills which can accumulatively create a strong team with that competitive edge. Fearless selling goes beyond recruitment alone, it’s a combination of training skill and new skills that create the best team.
In order to help others to face their fears we must help individuals to address their fears, by putting them in uncomfortable situations. Much like the cricket team, they rotate positions to practice and prevent fear when they are faced with new competitions on the pitch.
Contrary to popular belief, top performers can’t just wing it. Root’s from the England squad embodies the practice makes perfect approach, being the first on and last off the pitch, making sure he has his skills down to a T.
Back in the business arena, some of the best sellers are the ones who complete a lot of pre-sales research, knowing their client inside out, what they can say and how to approach them. England often watch other matches to gain a good understanding their competition, this enables them to research and then come up with a strategy that will take them on the road to success.
