According to a report by SNE Research , global electric vehicle battery usage, excluding the Chinese market, attained 165.3 GWh in the first half of 2024, representing a 13.1% year-over-year increase. This data encompasses batteries utilized in electric vehicles (EV), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). South Korean battery manufacturers (LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI) collectively held a 46.8% market share, a decrease of 1.8 percentage points compared to the same period in the previous year.

??China EV battery installations in July: CATL Extends Lead as BYD Loses Ground

宁德时代新能源科技股份有限公司 (CATL) has further solidified its position as the dominant player in China's electric vehicle (EV) battery market. According to data released by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA), CATL's market share rose to 47.3% in July 2024, an increase of 2.24 percentage points from June. Meanwhile, BYD, CATL's closest competitor, saw its market share decline to 22.83%, a drop of 2.49 percentage points from the previous month. CALB maintained its third-place position with a 7.16% market share.

BTR New Material Group has commenced operations at its new lithium-ion battery anode materials plant in Kendal, Indonesia. Inaugurated on August 7, 2024, this plant is now the largest anode production site outside of China. The project’s initial phase, representing a $478 million investment, has established an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons of anode materials. A second phase, planned for late 2024 with an additional $299 million investment, will increase the total capacity to 160,000 tons.

According to Fraunhofer ISI , the European lithium-ion battery recycling industry is experiencing unprecedented growth, with total capacity expected to reach a staggering 330,000 tons per year by 2026. TWAICE , a provider of battery analysis software, has introduced an aging model for sodium-ion batteries. This development represents the first battery aging simulation model compatible with non-lithium batteries, providing battery operators with a tool to optimize the use of sodium-ion technology. The model extends TWAICE’s simulation software to include sodium-ion batteries, which are emerging as an alternative to lithium-ion technology in energy storage applications. Sodium-ion batteries function similarly to lithium-ion batteries, but use more readily available, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable materials.
