"Battery mining" - Metals can be extracted from old batteries to supply the growing market

I find it exciting when a mining and commodities company combines smart mining with industry 4.0 and works with startups together for a more sustainable future.

Comstock Mining projects that global lithium-ion battery manufacturing will require 1.8 million tons annually of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). That is roughly five times current lithium mining production globally and more than 15x the total LCE used in new EVs in 2021. Comstock is among a handful of miners who acquired recycling technology to be able to sell materials back into the supply chain.?

"We are still an extraction company, but the opportunity with batteries is enormous," said Corrado De Gasperis, Comstock's executive chairman and CEO.?

"Glencore ,?Britishvolt ?to jointly build battery recycling plant in the UK"

Miner and commodities trader Glencore has tied up?with electric vehicle (EV) battery start-up Britishvolt to build a new plant to recycle lithium-ion batteries in the?UK.

The facility will help reuse expensive key raw materials like cobalt and lithium. The plant will be built at the site of a Glencore operation in Northfleet, east of London and is set to launch in 2023, ???????? ?????? ????????-???????? ?????? ???? ?????????? 100% ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????? ????????????.?

The deal is the third major step the Swiss mining giant has taken in the beginning of 2022 towards tapping into the further recycling sector.

In late January 2022, it partnered up with Moroccan mining company?Groupe Managem ?to?produce cobalt from recycled battery materials?at a plant near Marrakech.

On the beginning of February 2022, Glencore announced it would expand its Britannia Refined Metals plant in southern England, which has historically been a leading re-user of lead-acid batteries found in combustion-powered cars.

Minerals processing plants have entered a new frontier of data- and automation-based capabilities, while also improving their ability to deliver a reliable supply of refined resources.

Those who look closely can see the similarities between the extraction of metal from natural ore and recycling ore.

The evolution of technologies such as AI in the minerals processing sector is projecting upwards towards a safer and more productive environment and it is really exciting to be part of this global journey towards net zero.
