Battered, bruised but still beautiful

Battered, bruised but still beautiful

This old battered manual was my first exposure to LMI. Way back in 1999 I engaged with Ray King, the then owner and master franchisee of Leadership Management UK. In my role as Divisional Manager for a German business here in the UK, I asked Ray to come and do some work with several of my team, as well as myself. We were all very experienced in our specific market sector but perhaps it was possible to "teach old dogs new tricks" after all. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine it would change my life forever.

No other development programme I have experienced, before or since, has had such a positive impact on my ability to get stuff done. The programme helped me cut through all the day to day hassle and focus on the truly imperative things that delivered results.

Roll forward 20 plus years and here we are with a productivity crisis. Recruitment is costly, whether or not you get it right or wrong, keeping people is difficult, and whilst you have them maintaining motivation has never been more challenging. The outcome is that organisational customer service standards are dropping, staff turnover is on an upward trajectory, and staff shortages have never been more acute. Combine this with cost increases, supply chain issues, political turmoil, the ongoing crisis in the Ukraine and, in short, an organisation's ability to do business is becoming increasingly more difficult.

What solutions are available right now? No longer is it possible to throw more people at it, if you can find them it will probably be cost prohibitive. No longer can you throw more time at it, people are working long hours as it is, mental health and well-being is a major issue.

Improvement in personal productivity has to be the key. The single biggest recurring expense in most businesses is the cost of it's people, therefore any increase in their productivity will have a direct impact on the bottom line profitability. Furthermore, any improvement in individuals ability to become more effective will not only enable them to get more done in the same time, but also allow them the opportunity to get more done in less time. People will be free to enjoy work more, take a lunch break, go home on time and not take work home at the weekend. Simple things that people now truly value and appreciate.

When people feel more in control, when they have time to breathe, smell the coffee and lift their heads up from the daily tasks they feel happier. When people are happier at work they take it back home. When family and home life improves the whole thing starts to work better, social, cultural, physical, health, mental, educational, spiritual and ethical. The wheel of life turns a lot smoother for everyone. The power of personal productivity is palpable.
