Bathroom Plants

Bathrooms as we know can be a popular choice for indoor plants due the humidity levels and have purifying qualities. Which ones though. It appears those that like humidity but also don't require maintenance either.

Again a well known one are ferns but there are thousands of them. So ones that retain quite a compact root system. They add foliage, no flowers as they reproduce from spores and not seed. The varieties are, however, endless and can add a striking effect. However, there are some that clearly outdoor ferns. Some like shade and some like sun. Adiantum venustum "maidenhair" fern can potentially grow big but I have used in a bathroom. Dryopteris wallichiana is an outdoor fern, needs space, although does well in shade. So good for an anti social space/corner. Matteuccia struthiopteris too will not be suitable for a pot!

Bathrooms don't always have a window so we have to rely on artificial light. It is another important factor. Gardenia might make a nice freestanding indoor plants but not ideal in bathrooms, the moisture is great but they need many hours sunlight. They also need to be trimmed lightly to retain their shape. Ideally you want something that sits on a shelf 9 out of 10 times.

Mother in laws tongue Sansevieria trifasciata is a option. It needs a bit of light but not direct. It thanks to for not too much fuss so very low level care, easy to maintain. The plant is slow growing so will not need re-potting very often. Too much attention though and you kill it.

Another strong contender is the "spider plant." The plant spreads differently so don't give it to big a pot otherwise it won't stop. These plants are great since they offer interesting foliage, very straightforward to maintain. The zebra spider plant Chlorophytum laxum goes sideways as opposed to height. The bonnie spider plant is relatively compact but a more suitable one might be C. capense because of its upright leaves. Spider plants purify the air too so quite a productive plant.

Aloe vera can be used in bathrooms, their size, level of difficulty and make up (succulent) they don't need much attention or regular repotting. English Ivy - don't risk in any event. Monstera. Both of these can adapt to a bathroom environment. Aloe will tolerate partial light but perform better with stronger rays. Monstera the opposite. The plant needs space too, often a free standing plant so the room is needed. Moist, not wet soil as well. The Areca palm is also very effective at cleaning the air but may be a little big for the bathroom. It is easy to look after, low maintenance, thrives in sunlight but more of a tree really.

@GREAT article, Zoe! Thanks so much for this info....and I loved that you called it a mother-in-law's tongue. That was the standard plant all over our home when I was growing up and when I saw it today, people look at me like I am from another planet!
