BAT Malaysia – An Inclusive and Empowered Workplace
It takes all kinds to make the world… a saying that rings exceptionally true at British American Tobacco Malaysia (BATM) where diversity is appreciated and employees are encouraged to “Bring Your Difference”.
Felicia Teh, BATM’s Human Resources and Inclusion Director shared that the company is committed in driving a step change in diversity and inclusion.?In 2021, BAT became the first tobacco company to globally achieve both the UK National Equality Standard and Global Equality Standard for Diversity & Inclusion certification. The ongoing commitment is underpinned by BAT’s ethos of being Bold, Fast, Empowered, Responsible and Diverse.?
Felicia stressed the importance played by leaders in ensuring a progressive culture for people from all backgrounds regardless of gender, ethnicity, culture or sexuality.
“It’s not just about a particular initiative but a workplace that values diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging that will go a great distance in delivering a future-fit work culture. Leaders need to set the tone and walk the talk to embed this from within,” Felicia says.
This progressive mindset translates into the culture we see in the organisation today that has helped BATM clinch the title of Top Employer in Malaysia for the fifth year in a row. “It’s a testament to our continuous strive to build a purposeful and inspiring workplace. We continue to drive future fit capability building, accelerate talent for the future while embedding best practices for a conducive working environment” Felicia shared.
C K Remeena Prabhakaran, Supply Chain Director at BATM, believes that a huge part in creating a conducive working environment is through empowerment, making employees believe that they can and they will. According to her, empowerment comes with responsibility and trust, and during the pandemic this culture of empowerment was on full display.

“We are an organisation that trusts our people, allowing them more latitude to manage their work responsibilities and the recent work from home approach was a clear sign of employee empowerment,” she explained.
Genevieve Hiew, Area Head of Consumer Products for South East Asia believes what sets BAT apart from other organisations is the strong culture for empowerment and diversity.
“In most recent years, we’ve done a lot to raise the awareness, upskill managers and change the mindset of hiring managers to not fall into the stereotype nightmare. Instead, hire those you believe can perform best based on skills and experience,” Genevieve shared.
Entering her 15th year at BAT, Genevieve credits the supportive environment as one of the many reasons she chooses to stay at BAT. Having joined back in 2007 as part of the world-renowned Global Graduate Programme, she’s still learning new things every day, keeping her on her feet!
