Bastard By Name
I am engaged at the moment in the final rough edit of my new novel which is based on the life of the little known Elizabethan Poet, Thomas Bastard; he wrote only one book of any substance (Chrestoleros) before descending into a spiral of debt and disgrace which led to his untimely death in a debtors' prison in Dorchester in 1618; along the way he dabbled in publishing pornography whilst studying for the priesthood at Oxford (I'm not making this up); mixed with the likes of William Shakespeare and John Webster on London's Bankside and lied and schemed his way to oblivion.
I can think of no better model than Thomas Bastard for a fictionalised life, carrying as it does so many object lessons for the way we live now (as Anthony Trollope might have put it).
And then there is that other alarming habit of Thomas Bastard: he refuses to die....
I am looking forward to publication which is set for 1 March 2016.
