THE BASIS OF STUDENTS’ LAZINESS

THE BASIS OF STUDENTS’ LAZINESS

John will always come to school very late, looking so tired and sweaty. Every

student in the class dreaded sitting with him, because of his unpleasant looks and

dullness in academic work. John arrives at school when the first class has ended

and the second is at the verge of ending. He would manage to pay attention for a

few minutes before he falls asleep. This has been the attitude of John, the new

student who came to join our school last term. John is a very jovial student, but

lazy in academics. He would always procrastinate on every assignment given to

him.

The day of our usual counselling session with the school counsellor came, and

everyone was anxious about it, except John. Although he needed help, he felt the

counsellor could not provide solutions to his academic laziness.

After the counselling session, John was relieved; he discovered the cause of his

laziness in his academics. The counsellor also discovered that John will do well if

only his parents relieved him of too much work, pressure, and early morning

hawking of bread before going to school. His parents were invited by the school

counsellor, and after the counselling session, the counsellor and John's parents

decided to assist him. John made his own decision to be more serious in his

academics no matter the challenges, and that was the beginning of John's career

success.

Causes of Student Laziness.

For every decision by a student or an individual, there must be some trigger. The

following are the reasons for students’ laziness

A student can become lazy when he or she is always tired or hungry. This is a

result of the challenges they are facing at home, like food insecurity.

Procrastination is another major cause of student laziness. When students keep

postponing the time they will study, take lessons or work on their assignments

and projects, they become inactive and care less about their development leading

to failure.

Emotionally abused students are prone to become lazy. We do not expect

someone who has been emotionally abused to be active as a student. If proper

care is not taken, they tend to do things sluggishly and may not meet up with

academic demands.

Lack of motivation also can cause a student to be lazy. Motivation is the oil that

fuels the quest to do more. Without it, students may never be encouraged to go

beyond their comfort zone.

Wrong association- if a student belongs to a wrong peer group that influences his

or her decision negatively, no doubt such student will become a lazy student.

Steps to Overcome Laziness

Be intentional and determined about your success.

Speak to a reliable and trusted counselor in cases of abuse.

Avoid and stop procrastination.

Eat rightly and maintain a good diet.

Ask for help when you need it.
