The Basics Of Yoga
The word yoga derives from Sanskrit meaning "union." Yoga comes from ancient India and means a connection between the body, mind, and spirit.
It's a common misconception that yoga is simply about stretching. While this is partially true, it's mainly about creating balance in the body by developing strength and flexibility.
This is accomplished by performing numerous varying poses and postures, each that has a different benefit for your body. You can do these postures in succession, warming your body through movement, or performing them slowly, increasing your stamina and perfecting the alignment of the pose.
Your practice
Many yoga teachers refer to your individual experience with yoga as "your practice" as you use it over time. As you become more advanced and experienced with your yoga practice, it'll evolve and change over time so you won't get bored.
Yoga isn't for simply the healthy vegetarian, anybody can start today flexing, stretching, and forming a bond between their mind, body, and soul. "Your practice" is also relaxing because everyone is on their own level -- it's very stress-free and calming, unlike perhaps lifting weights where bodybuilders compete during workouts.
Taking classes
In addition to practicing yoga on your own time at home, or maybe outside at your workplace, there are many classes that offer instruction on breathing and meditation. Of course, it all depends on the teacher and class style, but you might also have inspirational reading and chants.
You can probably find these classes in your local area, typically at a gym or at the YMCA.
