The Basics of Warehouse Management

What is a Warehouse?

Warehouse is a place to receive, store and ship materials.

The Right Approach for a Warehouse Manager

A warehouse manager should value their customers' inventory as a banker values their customers' money and solve their customers' problem with the same dedication as a doctor do for their patients.

Necessary Elements for Warehousing

To ensure effective warehousing, three key elements are necessary:

1. Proper storage of goods

2. Correct inbound processes

3. Correct outbound processes

Responsibilities of a Warehouse Manager

A warehouse manager must ensure that:

1. Goods are secured in safe conditions

2. Goods are counted and well-maintained

3. Error free operations and on time Inbound and outbound

4. Real time update, effective management of records and information, documentations, and filling.

5. Cost effective operations.

Understanding Inventory

Inventory refers to the condition in which customers' goods are stored in a still and quiet state.

Inventory Checking

Inventory checking is the process of verifying that the quantity of customers' goods matches the controlled figure.

Consequences of Inaccurate Inventory

If inventory is not accurate, it can lead to:

1. Inability to ship goods properly

2. Inability to inform customers of their inventory levels

3. Damage to the company's brand reputation

Controlling Inventory

To control inventory, warehouse managers should:

1. Conduct daily checks in quiet circumstances

2. Reconcile discrepancies and make corrections as needed

3. Maintain a perfect match between data and actual inventory levels

What is a Warehouse Management System (WMS)?

A WMS is a system that manages inventory, inbound, and outbound processes.

Purpose of Using a WMS

The purpose of using a WMS is to:

1. Update inventory levels in real-time

2. Calculate inventory levels based on inbound and outbound entries

3. Enable warehouse managers to track inbound and outbound movements

4. Provide a record of previous transactions for reference

5. Accurate and efficient operations.
