Stories are an integral part of our lives.
Humans have been telling stories since the history of mankind, be it to:
- Communicate,
- Learn, or
- Connect
Storytelling can be really powerful for your business or your career.
Humans are typically more receptive to stories than mere facts or data.
A compelling story can turn a brand into a legacy, create a robust marketing strategy and win the loyalty of your clients.
A compelling story is one that is sticky, that is memorable.
Telling stories that are visual and capture the attention of your audience, is a skill that can be mastered.
Here I share with you some basic guidelines.
The five W’s of storytelling.
Who
Who was involved?
Who are the characters of your story?
You want to paint the picture.
Describe those involved in your story - How old were they? What did they look like?
This helps your listeners make the story real.
When
When did your story take place?
Is there a date? Or the time of the day?
You want to be specific on when it happened.
Where
This one is obvious – where did the story take place?
Is it in a city? Or a memorable place?
A familiar or exciting place can help capture the attention of your audience.
What
What happened?
What was the conversation?
What was the experience?
This is where you would spend the most time in your story.
Why
This is very important.
Your story should have a purpose.
Why did you tell the story?
What was the takeaway message?
Every story should always end with a takeaway message.
Stories provide meaning, create context and evoke a sense of purpose.
Professionals and businesses today are increasingly recognizing the importance of storytelling.
A good story can give your audience purpose and a motive to take action.
Use these 5 W’s to your advantage today.
