The Basics of Hiring for Your Real Estate Business (even if you don’t have the time)

Hiring is key to getting back your time and making more money in your real estate business. But making the right hire may not be as easy as you think.

In the past quarter, I’ve started really taking charge of my calendar.?

It’s been a great feeling to be able to own my time completely. I get to choose what I do in a day… and the next day… and the next. That’s despite my obligations as a real estate business owner.

Do you want to know my secret?

But more importantly, do you want to also own your time…?

And still be a rockstar real estate agent?

The answer is simple.

All you have to do is implement a well-defined hiring process.?

You see, having such a process allows me to hire competent talents to keep my real estate business running like a well-oiled machine.

To give you a hint, my hiring process involves considering not just if an applicant is fit for the job they're applying for.?

Nope!?

Actually, I do more than just that.?

I make sure that they’re also capable of handling bigger and better tasks as their career progresses in my company. At the very core, I also ensure that they are able to keep my existing work culture alive.

Curious to find out more about my hiring process? Well then, let’s get started.

Who to Hire

The first thing I think about when I’m hiring for a position is that I never consider just one position alone.?

I'm thinking about development.

Where can they go next??

After all, a huge part of keeping a culture alive and creating a vision for people is knowing that they can be something else.

So when you’re looking to hire anyone for your team, you need to think about what next role they’re going to fill in as they move along.?

For example, when looking to hire a new executive assistant, look for one who can be an integrator. Someone who has the potential of becoming a leader. This means that the person can ultimately become the VP of Operations for your company.

In the same way, find agents that have the potential to become a sales leader and a driving force of your company… decades down the line.

Now, if you want to determine whether someone is seriously looking to stay and grow in your real estate company, simply ask this key question:

“Where do you see yourself 5, or maybe 10, years from now?”

If their answer satisfies you, then that’s a good hiring signal.

Where to Hire

These days, it’s no longer difficult to find job applicants, thanks to job platforms.?

They are literally everywhere!?

So, there's no sense in limiting yourself where you can find new hires. You have Indeed, LinkedIn, WizeHire, Snagajob… the list just goes on.

I personally prefer to use WizeHire to find recruits for my real estate business.

What I like about them is that they have a few cool integrations. They’re syndicating an application to all the major job search platforms. Then, they all come back to one place:?

WizeHire.?

Plus, they also have some things that make hiring a lot easier. This includes their personality assessments and qualifications.?

The reason why these are huge is that it allows you to buy back some of the initial combing processes. Like getting to know an applicant, their experiences, and all that.

But let me tell you this: I know people who hate WizeHire or even LinkedIn. They prefer to use other platforms.

Ultimately, it’s really all about your targeting. And it all depends a lot on who your audience is or who you want to hire.

Now whatever job search platform you prefer to use, what matters most is this:

It can help you pinpoint the exact candidate that fits what you’re looking for.

Why Should I Hire?

Why do you hire new people?

Is it because someone just left and you need new talent to replace them?

Are you looking to expand your real estate business?

Or do you have a new and big project that needs more people?

Now, all of them are valid reasons. But for me, the biggest reason why I hire people is to leverage my time and money.

My time is precious, and so is yours.?

And if hiring new people can help cut back on the time you spend on some parts of your business…?

That’s not a bad thing to do at all!

In fact, it’s a wise move.?

You see, as a real estate business owner, there are only a limited number of things you should be worrying about.?

Non-income producing activities like paperwork should not be part of it…?

And neither should be prospecting all the time.?

What you should be focusing 100% of your attention on are income-producing activities. This is where you should stand and flourish.

Your ultimate goal is to put people in escrow. Anything else that does not involve that could be reassigned to someone else.

How to Find the Best New Hires

Finding the best hires for your real estate business is never easy. It takes great patience and effort to find amazing talent that can fit in your workplace culture.

But you can make the entire process a lot easier if you know how to ask the right questions.?

To figure this out…

You need to start by determining traits you want your potential hire to have.?

For example, you might be looking for candidates that are driven, coachable, and accountable.?

Now, you can’t go around asking: “Are you driven?” Or “Do you like being coached?”. It’s a lot more complex than that.

Instead, you need to find ways that will confirm if your potential hire has these traits… all without asking them outright.

And to do this, you need to ask strategic questions that will yield the same conclusions.

For example, if you’re a driven person, that typically means you have goals.

So you can ask the applicants questions like the following:

  • “Aside from a career in real estate, what’s your 5-year life plan?”
  • “What are the milestones you think you need to achieve to be able to own investment properties?”

Now, if you want to know if your experienced applicant is coachable, you can ask:

“What if I told you that everything you’ve done in your previous company is not the way we do things. How would that affect you?”

There are other appropriate questions you can ask to determine if a specific applicant has the traits you’re looking for.?

But these are examples of solid questions you can ask them to make sure that you’d get the sincerest answers from them. And that will help you determine if they’re a fit for your real estate business.

Take Care of Your Workplace Culture

Hiring new employees all boils down to taking care of your workplace culture.?

Skills and experience mean nothing if a potential employee could not fit with the company’s existing work culture. You can only reap all the benefits of recruiting great talent if you can find them.?

That’s why it’s crucial that you devote a considerable amount of time and energy to finding new talents that would fit your workplace culture.
