Are the Basics Enough?
According to a report on NBC Nightly News last night regarding the Cyberattack that hit the largest US meat supplier, the following was said.
"What we know is that companies of all sizes, large and small, are vulnerable to cyber attacks. So every company should be thinking about what it should be doing to be more resilient and to be doing the basics." - Kiersten Todt
My first thought was apparently the basics aren't enough or threat actors wouldn't be nearly as successful! Hearing about breaches is now almost a daily thing.
The report went on to suggest 4 things that businesses should be doing.
- Hiring an Experienced Cyber Team
- Keeping Security Software Updated
- Multi-Step Authentication
- Teaching Cyber Vigilance to Employees
I had to stop at the first one. Because this is exactly the point I have been making since the rollout of PCS' Total Secure IT Solution Program. You need to hire the right team that will provide protection, detection and recovery to the much needed and ever changing cybersecurity landscape and be able to fully support your current team or framework.
We identified that doing things the same way and expecting that somehow the strength of a cybersecurity profile would increase, was...(what is the word for doing the same thing and expecting a different result?). We also know that Cybersecurity isn't simple, it is always evolving and the challenge is finding a way to keep businesses ahead of the curve to stay out in front of and be prepared for the inevitable attack. The items listed in the report are part of the solution, but it isn't the end-all resolution.
Although Cybersecurity itself isn't simple, your solution is. If you are serious about finding out what your actual risk is and how to mitigate it, then you deserve to have a conversation with PCS to have your questions answered and determine the solution that is best for you.
