Basics of an Electric Vehicle - How is an EV different from an ICE?

What is an electric engine?

Electricity can be converted into mechanical energy by using an electric engine. Automobiles rely on the torque produced here as a result of the interaction between the magnetic field of the engine and the electric current in a wire winding. How an electric car works entails the following steps:

  • All electric vehicles use the same fundamental principle of energy transformation.
  • Such a vehicle would use a selection of electric motors or engines in place of a traditional internal combustion unit.
  • Simply plug in your vehicle at home or at a public charging station to keep it at full power.
  • The engine/motor, inverter, drivetrain, batteries, and charging infrastructure of an EV are its primary components.

Types of EV engine cars -

Electric vehicles that can be charged via an electrical outlet are known as plug-in electric cars or pure electric vehicles. The absence of gasoline means that there are no emissions from driving such a vehicle. Vehicles that can be plugged into an electrical outlet are called plug-in hybrids. Use electricity, and if the battery dies, switch to fuel. This vehicle type produces harmful emissions when powered by a gasoline engine but is environmentally friendly when powered by an electric motor.

In general, gasoline is used to power hybrid electric vehicles. However, there is a battery that can be charged through regenerative braking. Simply pressing a button allows drivers to toggle between the vehicle's gas and electric powertrains.

Benefits of Electric engine -

  • When compared to conventional vehicles, electric ones have 90% fewer of them.
  • Due to the lack of pollution, the natural environment is unharmed.
  • Reduced upkeep other than normal use-and-wear items like tyres.
  • Complete and utter competence in delivering torque.
  • Complex gearing is unnecessary.

What is an internal combustion engine?

  • It's a motor that uses the heat from the combustion of gasoline, oil, or another fuel (like petrol or diesel) with air inside the engine to power a piston or do other work.
  • An IC engine relies on the fact that the combusted charge is under extremely high pressure in order to function. The internal engine process is a part of the thermodynamic cycle of the machine.
  • The engine has numerous applications, including the automobile, aviation, and power generation industries.
  • There are many components that make up an IC engine, including the cylinder, spark plug, valves, piston, piston rings, connecting rod, crankshaft, and oil pan.

Types of Internal combustion engine -

  • Combustion-based Spark-ignition vehicle engine: The compressed fuel and air mixture in the ignition chamber of a spark-ignition engine is ignited by the spark plug. This IC engine uses compression ignition, which means it does not require a spark plug to function. Compressing the fuel and air creates enough heat to ignite the fuel.
  • Types of Internal Combustion Engines (IC Engines) based on the fuel they use: gasoline/petrol engines, wherein a mixture of fuel and air is ignited by an electric spark. Diesel engines, as the name implies, use diesel fuel, which ignites spontaneously without the need for a spark plug. Bi-fuel engines are internal combustion engines that can run on either natural gas or gasoline.
  • Based on the number of strokes per cycle – A piston is a sliding piece that moves against fluid pressure and is made up of a short cylindrical body that fits within a cylindrical vessel, sliding back and forth. In a four-stroke cycle engine, each of the four piston strokes (intake, compression, power, and exhaust) contributes to the overall operation of the machine. It has become the standard auto engine. To complete its cycle of operation, a two-stroke engine must undergo both compression and expansion during each piston stroke. The crankshaft needs to rotate once, which requires both strokes. Six-stroke cycle engine: This is an advanced version of the two-stroke and four-stroke engines. These engines use a pair of cylinders, each of which produces two strokes during each cycle for a total of six. This engine not only decreases emissions but also increases fuel efficiency.

Benefits of Internal Combustion Engines for Automobiles -

  • One with less mass: For instance, the batteries for electric vehicles can weigh up to 450 kilogrammes and store as much energy as 1.5 gallons of diesel fuel (4.5 kg).
  • Budget-friendly: Generally speaking, fuel-powered internal combustion engines are less expensive than their electrical counterparts.
  • Mobile fuels like gasoline and diesel are essential to the operation of internal combustion engines. However, batteries require anywhere from five to eight hours to fully charge. Because of the established system in place, the public has come to respect and understand IC engine vehicles and their requirements.

To Conclude -

Traditional engines are being replaced by electric ones. EV engines are more environmentally friendly, expensive to buy, but easier to maintain than ICMs. Both types of vehicles will be available for decades, so choose the one that best fits your needs or budget. Electric cars may be the future, but gasoline engines will last.
