Basics of Backup

While Veeam Software & Cohesity are two types of solutions - this isn't a 1 vs. 2 conversation. Here is the quick and dirty on how a business should get started in simply managing their data #backupandrecovery.

In the world of technology and IT Infrastructure, we have grown to ensure that every piece of data we obtain is kept and secured. Not only do we keep and secure it, we now backup everything... at least once.

What is funny is that as consumers, we have learned and en-grained the easiest way to backup our contacts, photos, family videos, and basically our livelihood as we know it, is in a cloud based solution = offsite. Yet as businesses, we still maintain backups on physical copies, locally, maybe only a few feet away from the primary set of data that runs and manages the incredible businesses we have built. We even see the copies just replicated from one system to another in the rack next door or the server below.

So as a business owner, what should I do to ensure the retention and safety of my data? Start on number one and build.

1. First step, replicate your data. At first, It matters less how you do it... just make sure you have a good copy of it.
2. Second step, move a copy offsite. Whether it is replicated electronically or physically moved offsite, find a way to have your Backup separated from your Primary.
3. Step three: Protect your Primary. Key pieces include physical security, right location to house your IT environment, proper backup power, correct server and storage configuration, and fire suppression.
4. Step four: secure and protect your Backup. Take all of the items from step three and apply to Step four.
5. Step five: have a third copy of your data and apply all of the above to it.

Don’t overthink it too much. There is always complications within any business when deciding how to manage the data and information that is being collected. Start basic. Make a copy. Build from there.
