Basics of... AR/VR (Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality)

AR/VR.... both have to do with "computer created reality", but what is the difference exactly?
To follow the logic of my "Basics of..." approach, I would define the difference as follows:
- Virtual Reality: A computer builds a complete digital world in which you fully "immerse". You normally use a VR Headset to enjoy the experience.
- Augmented Reality: A computer builds digital information and displays "objects" as layer on top of the real world. You can use a mobile phone, a tablet, a head-up-display or a specific AR Headset to enjoy the experience.
Obviously VR needs a lot of computing power as complete worlds have to be rendered very quickly and the more realistic the pictures and sounds are the better the experience. VR is mainly used in the industry, education, gaming and even in real estate marketing. Or so called "360 degrees" panoramas, which is perhaps the most common VR experience.
AR can be experienced with specific devices but also a "simple" smartphones can be used for it. Used cases are games, real estate planning, navigation, industry user/technical guides and so on... The most famous example of AR gaming is probably "Pokemon Go"....
They were big discussions in the past about which one of the technology would "lead" in term of acceptance in the market. In the meantime I think most have realized that there is a market for both as they often complement each other for different needs. And I think there is also a consensus that both technologies have their role to play in private/game/fun areas as well as in the industry/professional and business worlds.
In the meantime there are also other variations and definitions of these technologies like "Mixed Reality" where you display and interact with complete virtual environments "above" the real world.

4 年Thanks for sharing, Patrick! Really interesting what is possible, you mention some great use cases! The one I was fascinated by a few years ago visiting the Microsoft Innivation Center in Paris is 'surgeries across borders' via AR, where we got to see a beating heart in the room with us ... on the screen :)
