Basic Understanding of Psychoactive and Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids

In the Cannabis world, cannabinoids play a crucial role in determining the effects and benefits of various products. Among these cannabinoids, some are known for their psychoactive therapeutic properties, while others offer non-psychoactive therapeutic benefits without inducing a "high". In this week's edition of The Dab Digest, we'll explore some of the differences between psychoactive and non-psychoactive cannabinoids, including THC, CBD, THCa, CBDa, and more. We will also break down which cannabinoids are associated with psychoactive effects and which are not, from dabs and topicals to edibles and beyond.

Understanding Psychoactive vs. Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoids:

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol): Psychoactive

  • THC is the primary psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis, known for its euphoric effects and ability to induce mind manifestation aka your “high."

THC Molecule

CBD (Cannabidiol): Non-Psychoactive

  • CBD does not produce a high and is renowned for its potential therapeutic effects, including pain relief, anxiety reduction, and anti-inflammatory properties.

CBD Molecule

THCa (Tetrahydrocannabinolic Acid): Non-Psychoactive (Most of the time)

  • THCa is the acidic form of THC found in raw cannabis. It does not produce psychoactive effects in its raw state. However, when THCa is decarboxylated through heat, such as when smoking or vaping, it converts into THC, becoming psychoactive.

CBDa (Cannabidiolic Acid): Non-Psychoactive

  • CBDa is the acidic form of CBD found in raw cannabis. It does not produce psychoactive effects. CBDa is linked to potential therapeutic benefits, similar to pure CBD, but with faster recovery experiences.

CBG (Cannabigerol): Non-Psychoactive

  • CBG is often referred to as the "mother cannabinoid" because it is the precursor to THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids. It does not induce a high. CBG-dominant products, such as oils, capsules, and some topicals, which may offer potential therapeutic benefits including anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties.

Whether you're seeking relief from pain, inflammation, anxiety, or other ailments, there are a variety of options available to suit your needs. From psychoactive dabs to non-psychoactive CBD topicals, the diverse range of cannabinoid profiles allows for personalized cannabis experiences tailored to individual wellness goals.
