Basic and Simple Care For Dry Skin in Winter

‘I regret taking such good care of my skin’ – Said no one ever.

The festive seasons take a big toll on our skin especially during Diwali as a lot of cleaning, dusting, shopping activities are done to make the house sparkling clean, and the festival worthwhile.

This is also the time when rainy season bids goodbye, mornings and evenings become pleasant and afternoons are quite warm. The transition of weather from moist to winter can have an adverse effect on health and looks if proper care is not taken. The changing weather, dust, smog and even lifestyle can cause wear and tear on the skin which can be very annoying. During festivals, women also tend to wear a lot of makeup and apply loads of chemical-based foundation, blusher, eye shadow, bleach or glitter which can transform appearance instantly but deteriorate the texture of the skin, block pores or even cause rashes. In extreme cases, dry skin can become patchy, flaky and itchy too.

Dry Skin Woes:

Also, as autumn or fall as they call it in the US, would be followed by harsh winter, this is the best time to start taking good care of skin so that dry skin problems don’t aggravate further.

Beauty care regime for any type of skin can be divided into 2 parts:

Facial skin – Is soft and sensitive. Hence, treatment should be gentle as compared to rest of the body parts.

Body skin – Is comparatively rough. Needless to say, the treatment should be a little severe or more concentrated as compared to the face.

Here are a few effective everyday beauty hacks for dry skin in winter which I have personally tried or suggested people and they’ve given excellent results.

Facial Skin:

  • Never ever use a SOAP (bar) to wash face if you have a dry skin problem. Our skin’s pH is 5.5 and soaps having higher pH value than this (or generally higher than 8), will wash away natural oils making the skin drier. If used regularly, the skin will become darker or tanned. Instead of soaps, use a gentle face wash. Also, make sure, you don’t wash your face with a face wash too often during the day. Maximum twice a day would be more than sufficient. For flaky skin, add a drop (or a few drops, depending on how dry the skin is) of coconut oil or glycerin to your face wash.
  •   Sleeping with the makeup on is another recipe for disaster. If you have done heavy make up during the day, wash your face with a mild face wash. Then take some damp cotton and put 4-5 drops of coconut or olive oil and wipe your face properly. Your skin will feel super soft after washing your face next morning.
  • The most basic face pack – You must have heard from your mother or grandmother about the miracles of using a paste of gram flour, a pinch of turmeric and raw milk or cream as a substitute to face wash/soaps. Apply it on the face, let it dry and wash off with plain water. This will remove excess dirt and oil from your skin making the skin smooth. If you are using milk cream in the pack, gently massage on the face when the pack is semi-dry and wash it off with lukewarm water. Try this twice a week.
  • If you are in a hurry and do not have time for face packs, you can also use Dove which is quite handy and I can swear by, when I’ve nothing else in my kitty. Dove is so gentle, you can use it on face and body both. There are many face washes/moisturizers I keep experimenting with but Dove is my all time favorite and there are always 3-4 spare bars at my place. Dove, by the way, is not a soap.
  • If your skin is coarse with flakes, apply some face wash on the face and neck, wet a toothbrush with soft bristles and massage in a circular motion all over for 3-4 minutes. This way the dry and dead skin cells would shed off, leaving behind the fresh and supple skin. Do this once or twice a week.
  • Another extremely effective lotion which you can prepare at home is a mixture glycerin, rose water and lemon. Apply this only at night. If you have a frequent cold or sinus problems, add just a bit of lemon drops or apply it during the day when home. This one is my personal favorite.

Irrespective of which of the aforesaid remedies you use to clean your face, make sure to apply a thick moisturizer immediately after cleaning since the surface is moist. Do not rub the face with the towel after washing, just dab it. For ultra dry skin, add a few drops of coconut oil or glycerin in the moisturizer bottle once, if you do not want to mix it daily while applying.

Body skin:

Use a body wash or gel instead of local soaps. Add a few drops of oil to it. Since the skin is a bit thick, the body skin needs extra care. Some people feel that adding oil will attract dust or make the skin look dark. This is not true as you are not applying layers of oil. Since body wash is also mixed, oil would only make skin soft.

Night care – If there are dry patches on the skin, moisten the area and apply plain boroline (again a quick rescue remedy for dryness since ages!) or boroline mixed with glycerin plus a few drops of water, just before you hit the bed. You can also apply or massage with almond oil all over the body.

Lip care – Apply Vaseline or Boroline or desi ghee on your lips at night. A lot of people feel that lip balms tend to make the lips dry after a while. In that case, apply a bit of Vaseline or Boroline before you apply lipstick or lip gloss or even plain lip balm.

There are loads of ayurvedic / mild cosmetics and remedies that are really good for skin. Would discuss those in future posts, as the focus at the moment is on basic skin care.

SKINCARE FOR MEN:

Why should girls have all the fun… and pampering too!

Soaps are bad for men’s skin too. There are lots of quality face washes available in the market for men. They are still better than soaps, although the variety of face washes available for men is quite less. Not even cosmetic body shampoos or lotions are exclusively made for men, let alone ayurvedic ones. There is a huge untapped market there. Most men use generic cremes or lotions which are more suited to women.

Dry Skin Problems – Men

A couple of brands have come up with men’s fairness cremes, which is kind of superficial, but none has thought of providing basic skin care products for men. Some men don’t apply anything which is again not a good idea. When you feel good, you look good.

Till there are specialized products available at the counter, men can use regular body shampoos and lotions as explained above. Do make sure you cover your face with a helmet on a 2 wheeler as you are engaged in a lot of outdoor activities.

Special tip – As far as possible, use a little cold or plain water (at room temperature) while bathing. In winters you can go for lukewarm water. Do not apply hot water on face or body, as that would deplete the natural moisture, making your skin dry and wrinkle prone.

And the golden tip to keep your skin and body hydrated is drinking 7-8 glasses of water a day. This will prevent dehydration of all types – internally as well as externally, in your body.

Follow the above tried, tested, simple and inexpensive steps regularly. You would love the fresh good look and don’t be surprised if you get compliments on your skin from professional beauticians when you visit them.
