- The initiation of a data request originates from the UE to network/BTS and is directed to the PCEF (Policy and Charging Enforcement Function).
- PCEF maintains connections with two systems, namely PCRF and OCS. These connections are established through the Gx and Gy interfaces.
- Within this framework, OCS (Online Charging System) assumes responsibility for managing the data quota, while PCRF controls the user's speed. PCEF, in turn, receives user profile details from PCRF and enforces speed restrictions or provisions accordingly.
- To determine the appropriate speed for a particular subscriber, PCRF relies on the quota status in OCS, which is contingent upon the available data quota.
- OCS establishes specific rules; for instance, when the data quota balance exceeds zero, OCS will transmit counter status information to PCRF. As an example, if a customer in OCS possesses two distinct quotas, one providing high-speed access (e.g., 1 Gbps) and the other offering lower speeds (e.g., 1 Mbps or 64 Kbps), these quotas are mapped to separate SY services within PCRF. If OCS detects a quota balance greater than zero, it communicates this "normal" counter status to PCRF, signaling that the customer can browse at the associated speed.
