Basic series: CAP

CAP, or CAMEL Application Part, is a protocol used in the Intelligent Network (IN) of telecommunications networks. It is part of the CAMEL (Customised Applications for Mobile network Enhanced Logic) framework which enables network operators to provide value-added services in a standardized way across different networks and technologies.

Here are the primary functions of CAP:

1. Service Mobility: CAP allows subscribers to use services when they are roaming outside of their home network, ensuring a seamless service experience.
2. Service Control: It provides the mechanisms for controlling calls and SMS messages based on certain criteria like time of day, subscriber location, or account status.
3. Real-Time Billing: CAP supports real-time billing features, allowing for the deduction of charges from prepaid accounts as the service is being used.
4. Interaction with Network Elements: Through CAP, the Service Control Point (SCP) can communicate with various network elements like the Mobile Switching Center (MSC), Serving GPRS Support Node (SGSN), and Gateway GPRS Support Node (GGSN) to implement and control services.
5. Value-Added Services: CAP is extensively used for implementing value-added services such as prepaid calling, short number dialing, call forwarding based on various conditions, and more.
