BASIC PROTOCOLS within the required time periods
The JBCC can be ruthless with regards to the time-barring clauses. One of the most prudent sequencing of events, and the timing involved, is that of the submission of monthly claims in the requisite format. In addition, ensuring, step by step, that each player, whether it be the Quantity Surveyor as the Agent providing the figures to the Principal, the Agent, or the relative consultant, etc. actions their responsibilities entrenched as part of their appointment.
They all have their roles to play but precedent has shown that unless you are on top of and fully understand the requirements and the emphasising of such rights to ensure monies are ultimately certified, and on time, your cash flow will be affected.
Furthermore, when the chips are down and things (as they often do) go pear-shaped, unless you have ensured the contracting parties have acted within their mandate and issued all relative documents and paper work, its often too late to exercise ones rights in terms of the agreement.
The JBCC contract is there to protect both parties however unless you ensure your requirements are upheld by the Contract team, you can find yourself in very hot water, and without any insulation too!
