Yesterday I taught my students the basic needs of life; #air #water #shelter and #food. I agree that these essential needs help us survive as human being but there is a need we neglect.
Last year, I was approached by a stranger along LUTH road, Idi-araba. He was a Cameroonian and was so happy to find out that I understood French. He had lost his way and his phone was switched off. Apparently, his uncle had invited him to Nigeria and directed him on how to get to Mile 2 and the plan was to pick him up from there.
My dear friend could not speak English and was deceived by the bus conductors to take a longer route to Mile 2. He had been standing in front of the hospital for about four hours before he approached me. He had tried to talk and describe his predicament to everyone but nobody could help him because they did not understand him.
Language is also a basic need we all neglect. The inability to speak a particular language of a community hinders communication. You will agree with me that communication and understanding is needed to survive in this world. I suggest that the basic needs of life should be #water #food #air #shelter and #language.
