The word baseline is a term that can be used in most professions and understanding that term is critical for proper evaluation of every situation. If I am in the medical profession I cannot make any diagnosis without first knowing what that individuals "baseline" is. The same applies to technical settings, sales, management and so on. If I do not know what something or someone is like in a normal state then I cannot know when an upset condition is occurring. Understanding the baseline is always fundemental to problem solving and without a baseline you will never know when a problem is solved.
